Hi all.

I am currently in a nightmarish situation that would take a long time to explain. I'm wondering if anyone else has a bad experience buying a puppy from a Chungmuro pet shop? Mine is about to die any day now. Sad I was unaware of this scam that a lot of these shops sell sick puppies to begin with and then you can't get your money back.

Please share you stories....did they give you any sort of refund? Did you argue with them? To any avail?

Please give me your input....if they do screw me over I'm thinking about making a couple signs in Korean that say "Don't buy from (pet shop name). Your dog will die and you will lose your money" things of that nature. Then sitting with a friend near the pet shop on a Sunday/Saturday afternoon or when they are usually busiest. My hope is that they won't get any customers (normally they are packed on Sunday afternoons and selling lots of dog) and therefore won't be making any money. I'll explain to them that I will leave when they give me a full refund.

Anyone think this would work? Is it a stupid idea? Is it legal? There are some young guys working there, do you think they would try to hurt me? The area usually has lots of people walking around since it's next to a big intersection.

Your thoughts and advice would be really helpful!!!

As a lifelong dog owner, you should have seen the signs when you went to buy a puppy. First thing, it should be energetic. A wet nose it a good sign. Clap and see if it looks towards you. It should be big and on the fat side as a puppy. I know everyone wants a small cute calm puppy but those are the ones with health/behavioral problems in the future.

As I said it's a long story. When I bought him he was totally energetic, came toward me, played with my friend's dog who also was with us. He ran around in the little play area, clean ears, wet nose, looked very well fed....I asked is we could feed him, he ate well. The next day I took him to a vet who examined him and said he was in perfect health. His stool was fine...everything perfect.

A week later he started losing energy and having difficulty breathing. 3 vet visits later x-rays showed that he had congenital deformities that were causing problems since he was starting to grow. His heart is in the upper left part of his body, it should be in the middle, and is pushing down on his esophagus making it hard for him to breathe.

There's no way I could have known about this when I bought him. I'm not stupid when it comes to judging whether or not a puppy looks healthy, and I didn't ask for tips on that either.

If you have info related to my OP then please share, otherwise don't give unsolicited and condescending advice. Thanks.

Ok, preachy bit first:

Why oh why would anyone buy from a pet shop when there are thousands of animals (even puppies) available for adoption at shelters across Korea, or from good-hearted rescuers?? (please check out www.animalrescuekorea.org ) If you adopted from a rescuer you are more likely to get an animal that has already been vaccinated, is healthy, and potentially has already been fixed.
Pet shops and the puppy/kitty mills that support them only add to the overpopulation problem, and more often then not the animals they sell are sick, inbred, and liable to cost you more in the long-run with medical bills and heartache.

/Preach OFF

I realize that not everyone knows about shelters and rescues (I hope that changes in the future). I am really sorry to hear that your puppy might die. Sad Does it have distemper/parvo/something else? If so, please be aware that these viruses live on for months after where ever your puppy has been (just in case you were thinking of getting another puppy).

Don't really recommend making signs disparaging the pet shop, as I believe Korea has some liable laws that don't care if you are telling the truth or not. You could get in trouble, and the pet store people will likely yell at you (no idea about violence)

They may be more likely to give you another puppy if yours has died, but are you sure you'd want to go through this again? Especially if new puppy catches what your previous puppy had at your house.

Oops, just saw that your puppy had congenital deformities and not a virus. It is still sad in any case, so sorry you are going through this.

They might give you another puppy if you bring yours in if it dies. If you do this during a busy time (like Sat or Sun) perhaps that would discourage some of those customers away who were going to buy a puppy. Alternatively, they may give you money back to avoid making a scene.

Thank you. He's at the pet shop now waiting for the manager to examine him, they say his condition may be curable but the vet I trust said he will pass away soon. My Korean friend has just found a few stories on naver blogs about people going through similar problems with this same pet store, and not getting a refund, or getting another sick puppy.

I really think if I print the stories out (along with my own) and make a small poster for people to see before they enter the shop, it will discourage them from getting customers. It wouldn't be a truth issue since these are all people's real stories about dealing with this particular shop.

I hate hate hate that I bought from this store, really wish I had known about this stuff before. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Didn't mean to be condescending. You asked for advice and didn't give a thorough explaination about the situation so I was just offering advice as you asked. Sorry if you were offended.

Thanks...sorry if I'm snappy. I've just been dealing with this for 4-5 days now, and went back to the pet store today to be told I should wait MORE (until Saturday). My Min Pin is in a cage on the side just whining, barely able to stand, not eating. They won't DO anything, at least not til Saturday. He won't make it til Saturday and then they're gonna refuse to give me a refund. So, I'm frustrated to say the least.

Just want to know whether it's a good or bad idea to sit outside with info discouraging other customers from going into the shop til they give me a refund. Would it have that effect you think?

if you get a palm sized mini puppy, those have been bred to be small and generally they have major health problems due to the amount of breeding it took to get them that small. It's a risk that many Koreans take to get a toy dog....but the sad fact is that many of them have been over-bred and don't have healthy genes.

As someone already said, Korea has these strange liable laws where if you say or do anything to cause a person or business to lose money, then they can sue you. If you were to go through with it, I would expect the shop owners to get extremely confrontational, call the cops, and they'll shoo you away or haul you off to the station, depending on your actions.

I wonder why anyone would do that. Dogs are free. Adopt one.

Here's a tip - learn the defamation laws in Korea. I know you didn't ask for that specifically, and you don't seem to be very good at taking advice, but you may want to pay attention to this one.

I don't like unsolicited advice, it's true. I didn't ask for advice on how to choose a proper puppy, or where to buy one. Thanks for your input though, although slightly back-handed it was actually associated with my question and so I appreciate it.

Aye, it was backhanded, but it's solid. Your proposed action could land you in serious trouble and it'd have little impact on the business in question.

Perhaps a 'net campaign would help out more (?)

I am sorry to hear about your puppy. I recently lost one of mine and it was heartbreaking. What vet are you bringing her to? Is it one that you trust? I lost mine due to bad vet care.

I don't know if you will get help on this issue, as most people are slightly disgusted by purchasing a puppy when so many are up for adoption.

There are several min pin's looking for homes on the animal rescue korea website.
