I just blogged on the topic "Getting to know where you teach" and listed some amazing videos that I think are must watches for anyone interested in Korea and "where they teach". http://bit.ly/abkrTN

What would you recommend to read / watch, in order to understand Korea? What helped you?

Personally, the book I read before coming to Korea (a guide to Korea) didn't help me very much with understanding until I got off the plane and experienced it for myself. I don't think people know anything about culture, political and social aspects until you live and work here. A very important part of that understanding is asking a Korean--maybe a co-teacher, co-worker or the person that owns the mart down the street. Most people are really nice here and if willing to learn the language, they'll be even happier that you are making an effort to learn about their culture, and will most likely will want to help you with whatever you're curious about.

Good luck with getting other answers!

I agree - people , connecting with people is much better than a book. Before coming I read the usual - Winchester etc... and it really didn't help much. I find video more powerful though.

Just watched a nice video "Bend it like Jong" about the Zainichi in Japan. Really well done.
HERE it is
