Can anyone compare and contrast these two fine cities?
I'm wondering how they compare for foreign community, local culture, things to do, etc.. I'm under the impression that both cities live in the shadows of Seoul and Busan respectively. |

| try to add my two cents. i dont know about incheon other than its got a cool bridge. Ulsan is great i think. Im biased, based on my love of clean air, space and beaches though. You're only a 35 minute drive from busan. Of course Ulsan has a few beaches and a few more are up the road on the coast. The city is clean. I didn't see tons of westerners, but if you want westerners then go back to the west. Ulsan is big, but not too big and 5 minutes gets you out of the city sprawl. You can see a blue sky there, which may sound a little bit crazy, being that the sky should be a milky white like here in Seoul. With all of that being said, I like Ulsan. |

Incheon is closer to Seoul. Seoul = Fun. Incheon is better.

| YOu will regret not living next to Seoul. I have lived in Ulsan. It blows. No subway, buses are hard to figure out without Korean knowledge. You will spend all of your weekends in Busan of you want to party and stuff. If you want to hike and sit in your apartment all week than go top Ulsan. Some people like it, I hated every minute of the nine months I was there. |

| I don't know this first hand because I have never lived there, but I have heard many times on this very forum that Incheon was the absolute worse city in Korea. Armpit of Korea is one term that that I have heard more than once. People may say that about other cities as well, but I have heard it far more about Incheon. Being relatively close to Seoul was supposedly the only thing it had going for it. |

I dont entirely agree with this logic. There are rural towns in Gangwon-do closer to Seoul than Ulsan, does that make them better too?
Anyway, from what I understand, Ulsan is a city that doesnt have the benefits of being a city. Most people I know who live (or even grew up) in Ulsan had to go to Busan to get any their fun on...even though people in Ulsan tend to have money. That's not too terrible though since
Busan is also 30-40 minutes away.
They also had to travel to Busan to get anywhere else quickly in Korea since that's where the KTX stops at.
You'll have similar (to a lesser degree) problems in Incheon though as it's a rather cold, modern city designed for business (Korea wants it to be their Hong Kong) and you'll find yourself heading into Seoul a lot. Incheon is almost about 2.7 Million people (compared to Ulsan's 1.1) so it will probably have more options if you want to stay in town.
So the question boils down to if you want to go to Seoul or Busan for your social needs. |
