Assuming that I apply with SMOE, Epik, Gepik online for the early application process in October, and they like me and they want me, etc. around what date would I have to give in my passport. I mean, someone here said that I only hand it over for about 1 week or less, but around when would that be? October, November, December?

Applying October for a March 2011 start? You'll have to send your passport away for an E2 Visa around January or February at the earliest I would think. Then, once you are here, you'll need to give it to immigration for the ARC within 90 days of your arrival. The ARC and passport can take between one and two weeks to get back from Korean immigration.
Either way, it is way too early to be talking about such matters.
It may also be the case that you require a consular interview but I am not sure. |

They never want your actual passport.
You send a SCAN of the information page to Korea. This usually accompanies your application package (along with your resume, scan of your degree and CBC.)
You TAKE your passport with you to the consulate when you go for your visa interview and get your visa. IF the consulate keeps it (possibly for a couple days) they will issue a receipt for it and you pick it up when it is ready.
IF you are too far from the consulate and they allow you to skip the (in person) interview then you fedex it to the consulate and they put the visa in it and return it right back to you.
If you are referring to immigration taking your passport when you apply for your ARC, again YOU take it to immigration, apply for your ARC and they give you a receipt for it. IT is returned to you by delivery service (or you pick it up) about a week later (along with your ARC).
You NEVER send your actual passport abroad. It travels with you (since YOU can't travel abroad without it).

thanks to the both of you. I did read about early applications starting in October, but you guys are saying that even if I did apply in October, the earliest I would POTENTIALLY actually have to hand over my passport (at least for it to be held for a few days) would be January?
I'm just trying to figure this out because I want to make 1-2 more trips before I go to Korea and I want to make sure that I budget my time right. I have plans for a 4-day trip in November and was just checking to see that I will have my passport in my possesion at the time. |

You will always have your passport in your possession with the very short exception of (a day or 2) when you take it to the consulate to get your visa put into it (and you have to be there to do that so you won't be traveling).
This is the same for any travel when you require a visa (not just Korea).
