To get it out of the way, I will most likely be leaving my hagwon to look for a new one, mutually agreed upon, BEFORE the 6 months I see everywhere as the magic duration when everything changes.
1. Flight to Korea/Recruiter fee- I have heard every permutation of which you have to pay back within 6 months. My contract says both, but I have still heard conflicting opinions of the reality and even legality.
2. New diploma law- I know that from the US you now need your diploma with an apostille, which will take me at least 2 weeks to get (sending it back home, processed, and back here). I have also heard that you can request some sort of form from the Korean Education Board in lieu of this, obviously only for people who are already here. Is this another case of the 6 month cutoff?
Please respond with first or second hand experience. No myths and hearsay.
Cheers |

I have a question as well, though. So forgive me, for taking something away from your thunder. My boss told me if the hagwon, doesnt turn around she will have to close the school.
Does it look bad to have a letter of release??, cuz it doesnt seem like it would be. Unless your former employer talks really bad about you. She acted like if i got a letter of release it was such a terrible thing |

1. If your contract says you pay both...you pay both.
2. That form is not from the Korean Education Board that's another organization. And you can't do this yourself...your next employer has to request this. Also it has nothing to do with six months. You can get it at any time...just as long as you submit it (with the other documents) when applying for a visa. |

1) strictly a contractual matter - not a labor board issue. If your contract says you re-pay it then you are stuck with the bill.
2) Changes come into effect on Sept 1. You will NOW need a Korea consulate (in your home country) certified copy of your degree OR have it verified by the KCUE here in Korea (by your new employer). The process takes about a month.
Additionally, AFTER Jan 1 you will need to submit an FBI background check (if you haven't done so already) to extend, change your status, transfer or get a new visa.

Employers tend to think that if you ask for a LOR you are really saying that their business is a bad place to work. Moreover if they are a small business and you are the only foreigner (or bringing in new students) they see a potential loss of profit if you leave. Hence the emotional* reaction many have when you ask for a LOR.
* "I will have you killed! You will never work in Korea again!"
Sorry...flashback. |
