I'm currently in my first day at a new school and have been asked to deliver some kind of speech next week to introduce myself to the staff. It's an enormous high school with 70-80 teachers, which is SUCH a change from the tiny elementary school I was just at.
Anyway, anyone have any tips on what I should say? Everything I come up with seems canned or super lame. I'm terrible at coming up with these "year opening addresses" and I really want to make an impact. I'm gussing many of you have had to give a bunch of these and probably have some kind of generic blueprint of some sort?
Any ideas? Tips?
Thanks. |

KISS - Keep It Simple _____ .
Most of them don't speak English so keep it down to about a minute or so.
Basically a brief intro of yourself:
Hi, my name is Bloopity Bloop.
I am from xyz country.
I have been teaching for x years and I have been in Korea for Y years.
I like teaching in Korea because _________________________.
I like teaching high school students so I expect we will have a good year.
I hope to meet many of you and hope we can be friends.
Thank you.

Keep it short and simple. I was in the exact same situation at my PS. I was told that I, along with all of the other new teachers, would have to give a speech at the weekly meeting. I spent hours coming up with a silly 5 or 10 minute speech in Korean and English. I was called up to do mine first, before all the other teachers. I stood up and went on and on and on.....After a while the VP kind of told me to wrap it up. Then to my horror I watched as each teacher after me delivered exactly two or three sentences about how they were happy to be there and how they would work hard.
Pretty embarrassing way to start the new year. |

Bloop... try adding some Korean in there as well... it indicates a willingness to communicate on their level. if you need tips on that, Google or PM me. i'll see what i can do to add to Tompz's reply(nothing wrong with Tompz's answer though)... just thought i'd fill the minute long speech with a little something more. Guaranteed some folks will remember you for a looong time.
