Hello! I am going to Hong Kong for 4 nights in October. I have become exhausted by the amount of googling and research that I have put into choosing a hostel! I reckon I should have just booked the first thing I found but now I have seen the hundreds of options I have become very indecisive!
Anyway.....any information you could give me would be great!
I don't want to spend too much money but also want to keep my luggage safe so I would prefer a private room in a hostel (they all seem to be around the 15 UK pounds mark) I realize that the rooms in Hong Kong are tiny so I have opted for the single private room rather than dorms because I will have a lot of luggage with me (this trip to Hong Kong will be on the way home after finishing my year of work here)
I would like to stay in the Tsim Sha Tsui area. Preferably not Chungking Mansions....although my budget may mean I have no other choice. I have heard that Mirador Mansions are a little better? However, any hostels in the area that are not in these huge complexes seem to be a bit pricier, so are there any hostels within the 'mansions' that you could recommend?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
...oh, and I will also be alone so would love to be somewhere I could meet lots of people. |

You are aware that for about double your budget you can get into a nice hotel with internet access and a decent (all you can eat) breakfast (~400HKD = ~30 quid).
Places like the Evergreen ( http://www.evergreenhotel.com/ ) are convenient (1 block from the Temple street night market, 2 blocks from the Jade market, 1 block from Jordan station, 1 block off Nathan road, 1 stop from Tsim Sha Tsui MRT station and a 15 minute walk (or 1-2 mtr stops) to the harbor front.
Yes, I have stayed there (with my family).

I stayed at Venetian Hostel in Hong Kong and liked it a lot. I had a single room and it was really clean and I even had my own private bathroom. It was also pretty close to the subway and it was right on the main street.
My room was REALLY small though and there was a weird thing with the elevators (you had to use a different one after hours...if they were even working).
Anyway I liked this hostel a lot, but it wasnt much of a social place as the "meeting" area was outside in front of the elevators. The staff was pretty friendly though.
My first time in Hong Kong I remember looking around for "mansions" for about half an hour lol.... |

Thank you all for your input! I have checked trip advisor, hostel world, hostel bookers etc and there is a lot of stuff on there, I just wanted to ask direct on here. I find that the reviews can be really negative.......people don't usually say much unless they have something to vent about! Its great to hear from people who have had positive experiences.
I understand that I can get nicer rooms for only a little more, but I am really trying to save on this trip as I am spending 2 months in the States afterwards.....need to save my money for that!
thanks again |

Chungking is decent and safe, but a bit annoying and somewhat smelly in parts.
There are lots of touts on the bottom floor and the elevators are slow. A lot of the guesthouses employ Africans. They were mostly helpful and friendly. Some Hk lady said to watch your purse/wallet in there.
Do you like Indian food? There are lots of choices, and cheap soft drinks. I ate samosas from Chungking everyday I was in HK. |

That's where I stayed last year. Good location. Nice people. I had originally booked the dorm room, but then the guy offered me a deal when I got there for the private room. Was wicked. Had my own bathroom/shower in the room and a TV too.
This was over Chuseok. Place was crowded but no problems. Right near a big grocery store, Ikea, and the subway station. Very busy shopping area. |
