Well, this is not good news for the ladies here.

http://us.asiancorrespondent.com/korea-beat/subway-groping-on-the-rise#comments

Demands are rising for a policy response to the yearly trend of increasing numbers of subway groping incidents.

On August 11 the office of Grand National Party National Assembly member Jin Yeong released the results of a study, titled 서울 지하철범죄현황, which found that there had been 546 people reported as groping passengers on the Seoul subway through the first half of this year.

That is 81 percent of the 671 caught during all of last year. It also surpasses the figures from 2007 (549) and 2008 (460).

The line where the most people were caught was Line 2, with 314 arrests, followed by Line 1 (87), Line 4 (72), and Line 7 (1Cool.

The transfer point of Sadang Station saw 86 people being caught, followed by Seoul Station (70), Seoul University Station (60), and Seoul Nat'l. University of Education Station (47).

By age, 246 offenders were aged 30-39, 145 from 20 - 29, and 104 from 40 - 49. 266 were office workers, 45 were students, five were public servants and three were in the military.

234 of the crimes occurred between 8 and 10am, and 115 between 6 and 8pm, the times of greatest risk.

While I've no doubt subway groping is a real problem (many of my students tell me stories), an increase in reports and arrests does not necessarily equal an increase in actual incidents.

I've been groped. Or grabbed, whatever.

A few years ago while riding the Seoul Metro on my way to work I had a near-toothless permed midget grab my junk while she grinned in a most unwholesome way.

Not the worst thing that ever happened to me (she was gentle Confused ), but memorable nonetheless.

Thirtysomething office workers between 8am-10am is the profile of the most frequent groper according to those stats. Cop a feel on the way to work? Must be some sort of sense of entitlement.

Apparently it's not good news for women on major subways everywhere.

http://www.metrobostonnews.com/us/article/2010/02/09/05/5400-82/index.xml

In this particular incident the cops claimed they could do nothing...they didn't even fingerprint the guy apparently.

Although there were (according to the article in 2009) 412 arrests out of 587 reported incidents, so that's something. I wonder if "crazy" will be a new defense...?

Why not put good cameras on the subway? This is one thing that I don't understand. It would help catch the gropers along with the thieves and other criminals.

Damn, I haven't been groped since those many years ago when I was a teenager! Sad And I am still a lot handsomer than that ugly mug in your avatar.

Great idea! But why stop there? Why not on every street corner? Lots of crime happens there. Buildings, too, as many laws are broken behind closed doors. And of course, we need cameras in every home to thwart domestic violence, including the bedrooms where all that incest and sex abuse goes on.

I really think you are on to something. Rolling Eyes

I've always wondered about some sort of taserlike anti-groping device (underwear?) that people could wear.

Unfortunately the electric shock might make them contract and stay latched on.

Maybe the same tech as reactive armor?

Right, because we all have a reasonable expectation of complete privacy while we're riding the subway.

The important word is GOOD cameras. I can't believe how many times I watch the news and they say a suspect was caught on camera, and the image isn't even clear enough to tell if the suspect is black or white. And then they say "Have you seen this man?"

They're SECURITY cameras! Spring for one that gives good pictures for crying out loud. I can log onto Google Earth and see my house from SPACE! Why can't we see what color a bank robber's baseball cap is from 3 meters away?

Alright Stud, no need to brag about it. Some of us fellas here aren't getting this kind of hot action.

Given that she was a midget one has to wonder what part of her body she used to grab with. Little People- I kid, I kid

I think the #1 line through Seoul is more dangerous than the #2 line. What does everyone else think?

And don't we have an expectation of stopping crime dead in its tracks wherever it rears its ugly head? Or are you one of those criminal apologists? The trust of young clinton's post was to fight crime, not protect privacy.

What are the best stops to get on (or should I say to get off)? Twisted Evil
