I am supposed to start teaching my co-workers at my high school next week. I will teach a group of 3 teachers for an hour each week. I understand that they are of differing levels.
Just wondering if anyone who has done the same had any pointers on how to teach them. There isn't a textbook or anything so I imagine the first lesson will just be to gauge their level and see what they are interested in learning. I'd appreciate it if anyone had any advice for the first class.
Thanks! |

I teach a parents' class once a week, which sounds similar to your set up. I usually only have two ladies show up, so it makes for a nice little break from a hectic day. The teacher before me used a series of conversation starters (http://iteslj.org/questions/) and I have been using the same ones as well. They've been nice as a gateway into other things they want to talk about. |

I enjoy it. Depending on the degree of levels it could be a great conversation class. I use current events and things in hte news. Don't be afraid to let them choose a topic for the coming week.
I've had varying degrees of effort though. Some come but act like they don't want to. Others genuinely enjoy it. But I have one music teacher that I've taught for numerous semesters that I really can't stand. She spends all of free time stuyding English. But she never takes anything any teachers have taught her into consideration. |

I teach my co-workers twice a week, and their level of English is excellent, so I have a lot of freedom. They just want a conversation class, so I give them an article each to read for each class. They read it in their own time, and then summarise it in class for everyone else. This usually leads into a group discussion.
I used to give them Darwin Awards.

But I've run out, so I've starting using articles from the Telegraph.
