So, if I order something new from the states, what is the Threshold before it gets hit with an import duty tax? The new ipod touch looks pretty sweet, but on the Korean site it's 429,000W. It's $299 on amazon.com. |

$150 or less if you import it.
$400 or less if you carry it in.
(US dollars)
Tax rates are posted on the customs website:

Worldwide Customs and Regulatory Updates
The Korea Customs Service Prohibits Inbound Shipments Containing Goods Purchased from Electronic Commerce Sites from Being Classified as Non-Dutiable Shipments, Regardless of their Value.
Effective 22 February 2010, inbound shipments containing goods purchased from electronic commerce sites such as online shopping are prohibited from being classified as non-dutiable shipments by the Korea Customs Service. This regulation applies even if the shipped goods have a value of less than US$100, which is usually regarded as non-dutiable.
To facilitate smooth customs clearance, shippers are therefore required to provide a detailed description of such goods, including the product name and value, and the name and address of the electronic commerce site.
The Korea Customs Service has recently started tightening its enforcement of customs clearance regulations so it is highly recommended that shippers follow these requirements closely.

I wanna order something from amazon.com that costs about $150 dollars. I have three options:
A: Ship it here and pay the import tax. I have no idea how much it's going to be though.
B: Ship it home, have my parents put it in another box as used. Not sure how much it will be to reship it, but if it's the similar to my import tax than why bother.
C: Have it shipped to my friend who is stationed on base. I just worry since it's the military it's gonna take forever.
What's my best option? |
