|
|
Hey all,
Does anyone know of a really good craft store in Seoul? I'm not talking about the small stationary stores (though it does seem like they have everything). I'm looking for more crafty-type things (think Michaels or JoAnn Fabrics).
Help!

Dongdaemun Shopping Complex. If you are looking for fabric, it's full of it. The fifth floor is a beaders paradise, lots of beads and findings. To get there, take the subway, exit at Dongdaemun Station (422), exit 9. As you exit, you will see a huge white building on the immediate left.
Hope this helps,

In the basement they have yarn and craft notions. On the fifth floor they have felt and other accessories. |

Anyone know where I could get modge podge or similar high quality glues that are good for decoupage and maybe something to seal and finish (plain or add gloss would do). I haven't done much but would like to try it out. |

Just a note -- you mean Dongdaemun Shopping Town, it's the white building on the right as you come out of the subway, not the one on the left.
I think you can get decoupage materials like cardboard and varnish in many of the Insadong paper shops. I know of one in particular where I'm sure I've seen varnish and decoupage-able trays near the big crossroads area. The National Souvenir Center is the only thing I can think of nearby.
WendyRose, there's also a small shop called Turtle which is by Hyehwa Station, line 4, exit 4. Exit the subway and walk straight down the busier road and it's about three or four shops down from the Baskin Robbins, across the street from Benigan's. It's small but the adjummas are really helpful (no, really).
Additionally, Alpha Stationery Store is awesome, especially if you need help in English. I think it's a chain but I've only been to the one by Gate 1 of Namdaemun Market (outside the market, not in). If you knit, MyKnitStudio in Insadong kind of has a hokey name, but has an incredible stock of books and a pretty good one of yarns. The owner will teach you to knit, too, if you can't already. They don't have much in the way of needles, though. It's on the third floor of the building with the GS25 that you'll see walking towards Insadong from exit 6 of Anguk Station, line 2. There are signs to the right of the GS25.
I've also heard that knitting and felting stuff, as well as a lot of other magical-sounding things, can also found at the Myeongdong Underground Shopping Arcade between Lotte and Shinsegae stores, but I've never been. |

I went to Dongdaemun this past Monday and it is amazing! But I only found a handful of stalls (on the fifth floor) selling cotton fabric which is what I typically use in making children's clothing. Any other places to look at for those? Also I didn't see a lot of zippers, and no snaps or buttons. Where do I go for those? |

yes, the the dongdaemun market will have rhinestones without a doubt. 5th floor, and also on 1st floor in the building imediately beside the station. There looks like a tunnel between two buildings. If you are walking with your back to the station, go in teh building on your right.
exit 9. |

by the way, would anyone here be interested in setting up a 'crafters in seoul' facebook group? This could be an excellent, fun resource to have. I envision discussions of where to get teh best stuff, occasionally meeting up to do a craft or two, and a bit of feedback on current projects. What are thoughts on this?
or does this already exist???? |

Dalem, I think that would be fantastic! I really want to get into doing some crafts for the holidays this year, and to have others in the area who are into the same to ask for ideas, or discuss where to get things would be great! |

I went to Dongdaemun Shopping Town on Monday and at first it was like I'd died and gone to crafter heaven, but in the end I spent a small fortune and never found what I originally went in there looking for. I'd still say that it was fun. I've got a bunch of new yarn to play with. What I didn't find was the weight that I wanted. I have a pattern that calls for "Super Bulky" weight. I may just put 2 worsted weight strands together, but it's not my first choice. |
