Allen's 'Sleeper' is a beautiful, tight little film' And made 27 years ago no less! The confidence, the satire, the bold irrevernt comedy, the daring to play with convention, make fun of convention both cinematic and societal... And the decision to go in a deliberate direction that made it at times look low budget and even silly... The confidence and genius of that!
One of the most spirited films I've ever seen and definitely one of my faves of his now. So bold, so assured, so damn likeable, witty and funny.
He did go a bit ott with the Buster Keaton pastiches, but that's only one small element that's a touch unlikeable in a film otherwise brimming with insight, wit, intelligence, bravado and a very wise, sensual humour...
Fantastic.
And to think the majority of cinema goers would think it a poor film because of those very things such as the irreverence, the deliberate slapstick, low budget, incompetent feel of it. They would never realise the sophistication, the skill; the knowing confident, strong, subtle art it takes to make a film like this.
Lovely: a stimulating breath of fresh air into my film collection indeed. |

2007 was an extremely good year for film. No Country, There Will Be Blood, Assassination Of Jesse James (superior to those other two more highly lauded films, in my opinion. American Gangster, Hot Fuzz, Last King Of Scotland, Michael Clayton, Ratatouille, Science Of Sleep, haha even The Simpsons movie.
The Life Aquatic isn't as highly heralded as it should be. "This is the kitchen. Some of the most sophisticated equipment on the ship is here." The dry way that Bill Murray delivers that line kills me every time. |
