I still don't know if I'm getting Monday and/or Friday off during Chuseok week. Other teachers at my public school aren't sure either. I'm afraid that my school won't tell me until the week before (Korean last-minute planning), which is frustrating because if it turns out I do have Monday and/or Friday off I'd really like to go to Japan, and the airlines are running out of economy seats.
So I'm running this poll out of curiosity, to get an idea of what's happening with other teachers here, and to keep me mildly entertained while I wait for my school to make a decision. Also, it would be cool if you could write in your comments whether you work in a public school or a hagwon, etc. I work in a GEPIK public school. |

| We had a slightly shorter summer vaca this year though~ We started school today but would normally wait until the Monday ~ So we have the full week off for chuseok~ Which is nice if you wanna take a vaca .. but I will be sticking around Seoul~ I work for GEPIK in Gwangmyeong~ Each district and school may be different~ |

| I won't know until at least Monday. My best friend from the states is visiting that week, so I'm hoping the school is closed Monday and Friday as well. If so, I'll still have to use my vacation days to take off. Lame, but doable. |

| Hehe, just checked. My first school is doing Monday through Thursday, and my second school is Tuesday through Friday. So I get the whole week of by total fluke. |

| Yep, Tuesday through Friday for a total of 6 days. Was hoping for the Monday too as to make a nice 9 day trip out of it being airfares are $450 minimum so far in my searches, but it's still a nice little break. This one did us right after most of the holidays fell on weekends with the next week day holiday being lunar new year on February 3rd, 4th, and 5th of 2011 falling on Thursday through Saturday. That's about 5 months without a holiday except those falling on weekends such as Christmas. |

| I don't know for sure, but I believe I'm getting off from Sept 17-Sept 26th. Things are a little sketchy about Monday the 20th though. I personally wouldn't mind working it because I have to make up classes later in the term (in December) anyway. |

Well heres an idea, since you CAN NOT leave the country on MOnday or Friday without consent of your your school, try asking them if you have classes and if you can go. Then you book your ticket.
You are only alowed to leave the country on weekends or on red date holidays. The Monday and Friday even if they are off days for the school are still not yours to do with as you please.
Many teachers cant accept this, it is an odd rule to be sure, but a rule none the less |

Don't worry, I confirmed that I do indeed have Friday off during Chuseok week, and my co-teacher knows of my plans to go to Japan.
I've never heard of the "no leaving the country" rule, though. Does that mean that all those teachers going abroad for the whole week of Chuseok (including Monday and/or Friday) are breaking the rules? Does this also mean that teachers can't leave Korea during vacation time? And while we're at it, could you name the source where you read/heard of this rule? It's not in my contract, so I'm curious. . . |

| My provincial epik office declared out-of-country travel over "sandwich" days to be OK. But protocol involves informing your principal. |

| As long as you show up the days you are supposed to it should be fine. This "no leaving the country" rule is in place to cover their behinds in the rare event that you somehow were to die outside of the country. If that were to happen, who knows what the reaction would be from the school boards. |
