| I am graduating in December with my MA in Applied linguistics and TESOL and would like to work for a University in Seoul. I have received various offers but no one will tell me how much they will pay. Instead, they insist that I give them a figure. So far, my experience is three years of teaching High School in America, 6 months of tutoring international university students, one summer of teaching English in Italy and an internship at a university in the states. They have agreed to pay for my flight and my housing but I don't know how much I should ask for? How much am I worth to them? Do I have a lot of competition? Can I demand particular housing and arrangements? Also, if I decide to teach high school, can I demand more money since I will have my Masters? I'd appreciate any feedback. This is a big commitment and I'd like to know what I'm getting into. |

Depends on the conditions of the job:
How many hours a week do you teach?
What are your office hours?
How much grading and assessment do you have to do?
What level are the students? Are they core courses or electives?
Will you teach only uni students or is it a unigwon (could be any age students) or a mixture of the two?
What's the overtime rate if there are extra classes available? Will there be OT opportunities? How many extra hours?
How much vacation time do you get?
Do you get extra pay for classes taught during student vacation periods?
Is accommodation provided? If not, is a housing allowance provided?
will you be enrolled in the public pension plan or a private one?
Will they pay one month severance at the end of your contract (or give you the private pension refund as your severance)?
Uni's pay anywhere from 1.7 - 4.0 per month depending on these factors, your qualifications and experience, and their level of cheapness. |
