Today, I got back from my vacation and discovered a display on the bottom floor of the airport advertising a maglev that is being built nearby. Here is an article that I found about it after doing a google search.

Korean Herald wrote:
Korea starts to build maglev train rail

South Korea started to build a rail and other facilities for the countrys first magnetic levitation trains on Yeongjong Island, some 30 kilometers west of Seoul, on Tuesday.

The construction is a major part of the governments plan to commercialize environment-friendly transport services, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said. The country plans to operate unmanned maglev trains that link Incheon International Airport and Yongyoo Station where travelers can take express trains heading to Seoul.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Incheon International Airport to construct a 6.1 kilometer rail at the nations major airfield to test maglev train operation. Other facilities including six stops and one train depot will also be built, officials said.

The low- and medium-speed train can run at a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour, they added.

Maglev trains use a powerful magnetic field to suspend them above rails, causing less noise and vibration than existing trains.

The construction is a part of the governments 450 billion won ($385 million) project which was launched in 2006 to commercialize an unmanned maglev train service. The construction is scheduled to be completed in 2012.

After its completion, the maglev trains, currently developed by the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, will be tested on the rail for one year and put to commercial operation in 2013.

Korea will become the second country to offer urban maglev transport after Japan, the ministry said.

Japan has succeeded in operating low- and medium-speed trains and is currently developing high-speed maglev trains, it added.

Huh? Maglev with a top speed of 110kph?? It's not really worth building then......a rusty old diesel locomotive could do 110kph easily. Why not use conventional trains and track if you only intend those low speeds?

I understand that there is less maintenance involved with a maglev and therefore, in the long run, it costs less to have a maglev as opposed to a conventional train. Anyways, I think the idea is for them to get some experience with building and running a "low speed" maglev before making a "high speed" maglev elsewhere.

I rode the Maglev out to the airport and back in Shanghai. 461km/h..268mph for the shortest (fastest?) 7 minutes of your life.

For Seoul it would seem best if they ran it as a no-stop one-shot day trip out of Seoul. Maybe Chuncheon, Incheon, Cheongju, or Wonju.

Yeah, 110 km/h isn't fast. Though speed isn't the point of this particular project.

I'd love to see a 450 km/h service run from Seoul to Busan. Though at that point it would probably cost as much as a flight. At least we'd be polluting less.

I know.. even if they invented a train which ran on air and traveled at 300km/h it would still cost the same as a flight...

The good things about bullet trains are less time needed for check-in and dropoff in downtown (at least that's the case for Seoul and Busan).

They need high speed rail service. It takes too long to get to and from the airport as it's too far outside the city in the most inconvenient location and direction being the farthest West you can go instead of being inland to the South or Southeast of Seoul.

They can be loud if you are not on them.

Yeah...and I sprung for the first-class ticket. Rolling Eyes Got cozy in my chair, pulled out my mp3 player, my book aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we're there.

This should have been put in place instead of the line from Seoul Station to Incheon. Imagine making that trip in less than 15 minutes. Instead they built a bazillion dollar rail link that can often take LONGER than the current bus system.
