Hey, I have a question regarding the above. I've read on here that in order to get a job in S. Korea you need to be pretty much the stereotypical valley girl...but without a strong valley accent. I'm mixed race, Black and White, have worked with children for 2 years as an ABA tutor with autistic kids, am fairly handsome (no Brad Pitt, but also not the male equivalent of Susan Boyle), and have a really standard Californian non-accented accent (aka standard American accent). However, I have a BS in biopsychology with a history minor. So I already know that my educational background will hinder me slightly (I've been told that by various recruiters). I am wondering if being a mixed race male (constantly confused for Hispanic or Arab) will ultimately prevent me from working in Korea. All my paper work is in place, I just need a job. |

No you'll be fine. Go with public school if you can though as they tend to be more open. It helps that you're North American. |

I agree with the above poster 100%. You should be okay.
Don't worry about it, and if it really is bothering you...then like shoosta said, go public.
I've been told that gyopo (non-native Koreans) have a hard time finding jobs too, but since then I've been able to find TONS of jobs for gyopo. Right now, I'm in the position of waiting for the "perfect" one. So don't worry about it, really. Oh also...your major won't be a problem either (educational background only becomes an issue in hagwons, but that's when they're looking for like science/math teachers). So...again, you should be okay. |

I'm also a male and a minority. For newbie teachers, schools nowadays seem to prefer white, female and young (bonus points for North Americans). I think your tutoring experience will help a ton, but your job search may take longer than anticipated. I'm still looking.
Good luck! |
