Russia targets S.Korea's LG in piracy probe
(AFP) 2 days ago
MOSCOW Russian investigators have opened a criminal inquiry against South Korea's LG Electronics for allowing dozens of its employees in Russia to use pirated software, police said on Thursday.
"This is the first time... that a criminal inquiry for using pirated software has been opened against a major foreign company," the police department in charge of economic crime inquiries said in a statement.
"During a search, it was found that 60 employees of this company were using pirated software for their commercial activities," the statement said, adding that 60 computers had been confiscated as part of the investigation.
The police estimated the losses at 51,000 euros (65,000 dollars).
US software giant Microsoft says it suffered some one billion dollars in lost revenue in 2009 due to software piracy in Russia, which is also a major concern in negotiations for Russia's accession to the World Trade Organisation.
Pirated software is widely available in Russia including in major shops.

Well, piracy laws are obviously not cared about in South Korea. Who knew that Russia would care. Let's wait to see what happens. |

Piracy used in businesses is pretty high everywhere. I'm surprised it was only 60. LG must have pissed of the Russian government. |

Yes I'm sure the rich and powerful care about this issue. But none of this changes the fact that I don't have a car. |

What does you not having a car have to do with anything?
Obviously bribes weren't paid to somebody. They can't have been using very high tech software if it only cost 1000 bucks per computer. MS Office, Auto Cad and Photo Shop would equal up to a thousand bucks. Most professional accounting software costs more than that. |

Russis is just as bad for stealing technology.
About 2 years ago, some GM Daewoo employees left te company and sold some technology to a Russian cr company. When criminal charges were pending, one of them pulled a Noh Moo-Hyun. |
