Hello everyone. I hope I'm asking this question in the right section. I'm a bit new with the whole airport procedure but if I bring my laptop, I read that you have to have it on while you walk through the metal detector (? Sorry I'm new to travel). Is this true? My laptop is pretty old and the battery has died out. I prefer not to get a new laptop.

No. You take it out of its bag so it runs through the luggage scanner separately. You don't carry it through the metal detector or turn it on.

To confirm I take the laptop out of my bag and let it run through the luggage scanner without having the need to turn it on during this process correct? Thanks in advance.

At some airports (primarily US and Canadian) = yes.

At many airports they just scan it in the bag and if there is something they can't see through on the x-ray they will do a visual or take it out of the bag and rescan it.

I'll be going to Pearson Airport. Most likely they'll ask for the laptop outside of the bag?

Come on, seriously. Do you need someone to hold your hand through all this?

You'll find out at the airport. The screeners will definitely let you know if you're doing something wrong. This is not a big deal.

Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong all make you take it out.
