Okay so I've seen too many friends wreck there hard drives with torrents and it wil not be happening to me; no torrents to be downloaded directly to my hd.
I have an old Ibm / LG thinkpad with pentium 3 and less than half a g of memory, and ethernet internet card.
Will that old laptop be able to download torrents so I can them scan them for malware and viruses and then transfer them to the hd of my new laptop?
I'm too scared to download to my hd after seeing so many friends wreck theres (and at the same time be in absolute denial as they love free media so much...)
I was going to get a 100 g ext hd and download directly on to that, but my friend tried that and found you can ONLY download the torrents initially to you internal Hd. I really don't want to do that.
What are my options here? I have some on my school pc and saved them to USB and will scan them first before putting them on my laptop HD. But I can't really keep relying on the school's PC and I've noticed School pc's with torrents on them getting slower and jammed with pop up wares and stuff in the past and don't want to do that again. |

"Theirs", not "theres".
Does your laptop have E-SATA? Use that; the computer sees them as internal drives.
Downloading or saving torrents on a school PC is a stupid idea, especially if they aren't on the up-and-up. |

1. (toungue in cheek 1/2 way) - 1. The superior act is a defense mechanism called "compensation." It is used by someone who has hidden, unacknowledged doubts about his or her powers. For example, someone with ordinary, second-rate ideas corrects others' grammar (translation: "I don't have to consider your ideas or respond to them, because your bad grammar proves I am smarter than you.").
2. e-sata sounds like something out of starwars to me. what is it?
3. It's all on the up and up, but I don't like feeling like I'm expoiting my work pc. |

1. i see you're new. dont worry about the posters on this website, 90% of them are reject morons that have nothing better to do than point out other people's mistakes to make them feel better about the fact they're doing their 10th lap in korea.
2. check the comments, read reviews, download from legit sites. look at the size of the torrent before you download it and compare it to similar torrents.
get hooked up with demonoid, torrentleech.org, etc, decent websites and you shouldnt really have any issues. ive never gotten a virus thus far and ive downloaded over 5TB of crap.
3. use and abuse you're workplace comp, thats why its there. |

i highly recommend kaspersky antivirus. im not sure about the firewall as ive never used it, but the antiv works great--takes up little system resources compared to others like norton... |

Using utorrents on the work pc. Seems good.
Though for some reason dowloading slow. Took 2 days to download 15 gigs worth of Sopranos. I do live in a 'myeon' out in the sticks though.
I might use the same programme on my laptop and try it once and see how it goes after checking user comments and reviews for the torrent etc... |

Your friend was WRONG.
I use a 1 TB (1000 gigabyte external) HDD connected via USB to download torrents to and have no problems.
Your 1/2 gig HDD will be too small for downloading anything except perhaps some mp3s or low res VCD type videos.
If you don't want malware and viruses then quit using public trackers or at least read the comments before you download the file.
Be very careful if you are downloading executable files from public trackers. As a general rule they are full of viruses and malware.

DO NOT open any file ending in .exe from a public tracker without reading at least 2-3 pages of the comments. And even then, do so at your own risk.
Otherwise, you're pretty much safe, just don't be stupid.

Check that site out for invites to private trackers. I've loved it. |

Anything ending in .EXE or .COM is a bad idea.
Even zip files (.ZIP) is unusual for a torrent, because it could explode an exe file onto your machine. You are not in any serious danger unless you click the file and run it.
That said, torrents are generally safe. But be sure to run movie files or mp3s, AVI, MPG, MP4, MP3, are all legit. |

Okay so you guys are giving me faith enough to take my first baby steps using torrents on my private laptop.
So main things are
1. Watch out for .exe , .com, .zip files
2. Try to downlaod to an external hd rather than internal
3. Scan the user comments and reviews (and by the same token, I guess those with no user comments yet, skip and wait and let others be the guinea pigs for them and see how they get on.)
4. Don't use public trackers - SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN, please remember you are literally speaking a language I barely understand here...! Sounds like a detective!
5. Good firewall and anti virus programme. Check!
Anything else before but for the grace of God go I? |
