http://10magazine.asia/7227/ateks-2nd-presidential-election/

Quote:
Next month marks the completion of ATEK President Greg Dolezals one-year term as president of the organization. The organization has grown and achieved significant successes during his tenure. With President Dolezal set to leave office, ATEK is announcing its second presidential election.

This August, our presidential candidate is Ms. Jaehee Oh, a labor officer from the Busan PMA. Ms. Oh, a Korean citizen from Busan who lived in America for eight years, has been teaching English in Korea for five years and is fully bilingual in Korean and English. Her understanding of both Korean language and culture makes her an ideal candidate to build connections with Korean organizations and institutions.

You can learn more about becoming an ATEK member at the ATEK website. atek.or.kr

The endorsement is clear-

ATEK will continue to influence most people's lives the same amount as they have in the past.

There is only one candidate. What is surprising about them endorsing the only option? Were you expecting them to write in Ron Paul?

Isn't ATEK an organization for foreign teachers?

Yes I know they say anybody can join who meets the requirements but that's how it started and that's who the vast majority of its members are.

Yet not a single one of them decided to run for president? Something a bit ironic about that and says something about the general level of involvement.

In fact the current president has gone on record as saying this.

"As we are an association of foreign teachers in Korea, any accusation against the foreign teacher community is an attack against our members by default"

As for ATEK "ATEK has filed a complaint with the Korean Press Ethics Commission regarding the misrepresentation of foreign teachers in the Korean media".

Now I have nothing against Ms. Oh and I am sure she is very capable. It just seems a little strange that an association which is overwhelmingly comprised of foreign teachers is hiring a non-foreigner to represent them.

You have to be a member of this association to run for president.

Makes perfect sense to me as to why this is the case ...

10 Magazine edited the article to now say
Quote:

So, did 10 Magazine change its mind about the endorsement?

We changed our mind about the typo, actually. Decided not to run with it. That's what good editors do.

You speak for 10 Magazine? So, it was a typo? There's no actual endorsement? Good editors check what goes out before they release it or post it.

In so much as I work for 10, yes, I speak for 10. We do our best to support ATEK and give them a monthly column to talk about the latest developments in the organization. We weren't endorsing the candidate so much as helping ATEK share the news.

It looks like one of the pronouns wasn't changed in the proofreading. I'll take responsibility for that one.

What about FREED, the Busan wing of A.T.E.k. Are they offered a voice in the magazine? Seems to be fair that a representaive of this fine oreganization should also be allowed to write a column. Any groups which claim to represent me , even when I didnt ask for their help, I want those groups to be heard. Free FREEd!!!

FREED is not a wing or a part of ATEK rollo.

As for the one candidate election, this is nothing new for ATEK. The organisation is still relatively small and new. It is also (I think) sowly coming to grips with the hard reality of the nature of the foreign ESL market/population.

That reality being that the ESL market is made up, in vast majority, of transient new grads who work in Korea for 1-2 years and for whom teaching is a 'gig' that pays reasonably well and allows them to live abroad and travel. As such, they typically have very little interest or will in long term engagement in the cause of English Teachers in Korea.

This is what was said by myself and many others when the debate over the forming of ATEK saw the light of day.

ATEK is doing good because they scaled back their activities and for the most part dropped the shrill human rights activism.

At some point ATEK will settle down and become a central information resource for Foreign Teachers. If it tries to do more, it will either fold under the pressure and through a lack of continuity and input from experienced members or get into trouble as it did before.

If ATEK truly wants to become more, it will need FULL-TIME PROFESSIONALS whose job is ATEK. Not Teachers who volunteer for ATEK as a second job. This will be challenging because of work visa rules as E2s are in Korea to teach only. F-visa holders would be the solution but to attract long term professionals, ATEK would need to offer competetive compensation packages. This it cannot do under its current form as it is not allowed to collect money.

Personally, I think ATEK could do well to focus on being just a central information resource, a networking provider and an organisation that links with other organisations to offer training workshops and information support.

Anything beyond that is a tad unrealistic considering the conditions outlined above.
