So I went down to the police station (here in Korea) to get my fingerprints for my FBI background check. And there's two things that stick out that I'm wondering about.

First, they made a photocopy of my fingerprints along with a copy of my ARC and put it them a folder. Does that seem weird?

Secondly, some of my prints, especially one finger, has lots of cracks (not the fault of the technician, just the way my fingers are). The one finger is so bad you can barely see anything except the edges, the middle is useless. Other fingers have cracks, but the general fingerprints with points can be made out. Will this be a problem?

What city or gu station did you go to? I would have requested one copy, taken that one copy, and left.

Does it really matter that they have your prints? Were you planning on committing any crimes?

Yep, just let them tap your phone lines and use sound amplification to make sure if you say something that might possibly be illegal. I mean who cares if they listen to you and your girlfriend and/or wife having sex. YOU'RE CLEARLY NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG!

In this case, I have to say get over it, though. You waive rights when you choose to live in a different country.

Police keeping finger prints on file is SOP. You get finger printed for whatever reason at a police station and the station has the right to keep it on file. Your ARC card was probably also copied so they have something to identify your prints with. It's no big deal and frankly nothing to worry about unless you're planning to break laws. Relax dude.

Finger print filing is standard in the States as well. Ever been to the DMV? they got your prints on file. Ever been printed at a station for whatever reason? They got your prints on file.

As for your fingers being nasty, I wouldn't worry too much about it. In fact, if you DID commit some crimes and the FBI is looking for you, having messed up fingers might even come to your advantage. The background check will not be rejected because you have scars on your fingers.

This is not entirely accurate. It would be determined state by state first of all. I can tell you that in Nebraska, prints are kept on file only in certain circumstances. I was printed to run a background check once, and the law specifies that those prints are NOT kept on file. However, if you want to carry a concealed weapon, then you are printed and those ARE kept on file.

Also, I have been printed for a Federal job before, and the technicians had very specific guidelines to follow for taking the prints. IF the finger is cracked because that's how it is all the time, then don't worry about it. If it's because of dry skin or an injury, then it would be a problem (again, this is for US Federal checks).

But back to the original point, why do you care if they keep it here? You've already let them test you for diseases, registered your address and probably phone number, let them tell you where you can and cannot work, etc. While I disagree with the spirit about giving up your rights, you did make some serious concessions already.

Yes, of course, keeping fingerprints on file = wire tapping your apartment.

I'm sorry I made such a simple mistake!

What's next, they're going to keep a photo of me on file as well??? Oh the hugemantitties!!!

Just had my prints taken earlier at Mapo Police Station. They kept a copy of my prints. Like said above, no big issue. They do the effort of making the prints, might as well keep a copy on file. The guy was quite professional, worked in the "CSI" department. All in all a pretty interesting experience; work on your Korean a bit, see a police station. Everyone was really nice, but I bet they get sick and tired of this by latter this year when most every foreigner in Korea goes in for prints.

^^ this.

It's a privacy issue guys. After telling them what needs to happen, if they insist, then concede. Asking for permission will surely give them (anyone) an opp to go one way or the other. Stop giving options and you won't feel this way.

I hardly think laguna was over the top, either. Most of you have all your freely available info on facebook, don't you? Should I assume?

ROK: keeps fingerprints of all of her own citizens and some foreigners
US: keeps fingerprints of some of her own citizens and all foreigners

See the irony?

Odd leaps in logic AND name calling.

Nice.

Thanks for the input...

As far as the fingerprints being nasty, I have noticed in the past that my fingers are like this (this is my first time to be fingerprinted).

As far as keeping the copy, I was just asking to see if it's normal. I think my tone implied that. Anyways, so it does seem this is SOP. Also, my K-girlfriend who helped me a bit with this told me that her (Korean) friend went to get fingerprinted for a visa to another country (maybe AUS, not sure). Seems that they kept her prints on file.

About the DMV... I don't recall being printed there.

Also, I haven't heard this about the Korean government keeping all citizens' prints on file. Are you sure?

Dude, every single Korean reaching 18 and getting one's National ID Card issued goes through this procedure, myself included. Out of all fingerprints taken, only the right thumbprint gets printed on the back of National ID, though.
