|
|
I downloaded Series 3 of the wire. They seem to be avi files. Season 2 is avi files and they play in media player no probs. They are all bit torrents. I have windows 7 ultimate pirate.
Season 3 are avi but when I try to play them in media player it says i don't have the codecs to play these files.
Every codec pack I tried after a web search were .exe files and I remember in another thread posters telling me that .exe files are bad.
Can you please point me in the direction of a good codec pack to download that is clean and easy to use?
thanks

It's really hard not to say, 'just get VLC'......it will play everything.
But if you want to play HD video on a slightly slow computer then Media Player Classic - Home Cinema, is best because it can allow your graphics card to do all the hard work instead of your CPU. |

The easiest solution is just to use vlc player and never worry about codecs again.
Just a quick note .exe files are not bad per say. They are simply programs. However they can also be or contain virus. I never scan avi mp3 jpg txt ... files, however I always scan .exe or zip/rar files (unless they come from my private torrent sites).
A good place to download freeware is http://download.cnet.com/windows/ it doesn't mean that the programs are good but it does mean they are safe |

Best one. Comes with Media Player Classic which plays anything.
Been using this for years. And file hippo is 100% safe. |
+1
IMO klite is more powerful, but VLC is very easy to get started with, and it will most likely do what you need it to do. |

I find the VLC interface on the PC really ugmo. On my girlfriends mac it looks great. Maybe there's an option I missed.
Anyway, as others said, VLC or k-lite will do the job. |

I'll try to download VCL player first.
Sounds the simplest option.
I'll let you know how I get on... |

Turns out the files DO play in WMP. I was trying to play them before they were still downloading / finished I guess as they just had an very basic graphics icon but now they have turned into screenshots in the folder and play perfectly.
Lesson learned = don't try to play torrents until they have finished downloading.
Lol at me |

Okay currently my upload speeds are between 5 - 10 times faster than my download speeds.
Why?
Seems somewhat unfair no?
Can I switch it around somehow?
EDIT - Aha! I think worked soemthing out for myself! Just downloaded Ringu 1 and was shocked to found it 50% loaded after just a few minutes.... at speeds exceeding 1000kB p/s. Whereas season 6 of the sopranos I'm lucky to get over 100 KB p/s...
Ringu 1 Has 10 seeds and only 1 peer (leechers - right?) The others have lot of seeds but an equal or large ammount of peers too.
Does this affect download speeds? |

Having a high leecher to seed ratio often means that you will go quite fast for the first part of the torrent, until you get to a higher percent downloaded than the average of the leecher swarm. During that first period you can feed off all the other leechers who are still downloading.
Then, once you get to the front of the pack you become solely dependent on the seeder(s) who has the whole of the file and your down speed can plummet. Meanwhile you've become a sort of sub-seeder, feeding all the new leechers who are jumping on. This is most the case with brand new highly demanded torrents, like a game on launch day or a movie when the R5 first comes out.
Also, you can limit upload speeds in utorrent. Just right click on a torrent in the main window and go to Bandwidth Allocation=>Set Upload Limit. I usually don't let torrents upload at over 50k/s as at above that it starts messing with surfing/games. |

VLC is the best option, no codecs to deal with |
