Wanted to know what people thought was the best country one could go to visit in order to change a work visa (other than flying back to their home country).
I heard Japan is quite quick in processing your visa (like 2 days to 5 days) and there are ferries in Pusan that go to Fukoaka and shimonseki.
But I was also thinking of a taking a ferry to China, however while it might be cheaper to stay there I don't know how long it will take.
Or if I flew maybe to the Philippines, Thailand or India, since I heard these places are cheap places to visit.
Any ideas? |

I think that the answer to your question depends on how long you plan to stay. 2 days? 1 week?
In terms of pure convenience, I would say that taking the hydrofoil or ferry from Busan to Fukuoka is the best option. There is actually a hostel that you can stay at in Fukuoka, but you had better book ahead of time.
Also, you should be aware that China is likely not an option for you due to their bizarre new requirements for the tourist visa. If you are in Korea as a foreigner, you must have 6 or more months remaining on your Korean visa. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to go to China. Also, if you are an American, you will have to pay around 180 thousand Won to a travel agent just to get a tourist visa to China. And no, you cannot deal directly with the Chinese Embassy in Seoul. Its services are now only for Chinese and Koreans. |

Fastest visa run is Japan. Typically overnight service. You can use the consulates in Fukoaka or Osaka (depending on where you are going from).
Costsof a visa run (including the overnight stay) are typically in the range of US$200 (not including transport to/from Japan).
Manila typically takes 4 work days to process an E2.
Thailand takes 4-7 work days.
Don't know about India (and you have to obtain an entry visa to go there).
China was always a bother for many reasons (and you have to obtain an entry visa to go there).

Thanks. Very informative!
I was thinking if I did go the Japan route for revolving doors for teachers I was wondering which would be a better place to stay. I was considering the capsule type hotel but I read those things are like cocoons and are often underground so I am kind of claustrophobic. I heard someone say the business hotels were not so bad since they are cheaper and set up for traveling business persons. Do you know anything about those types of hotels? |

lots of good information in the visa run sticky threads (including maps, hotel specifics, locations, prices, etc.
The hotel across the street from the K-consulate in Osaka is OK and was about 9700 yen per night. Not the cheapest but you won't be any closer or more convenient to the consulate.
There are lots of other choices ranging in price from 3500 yen up to about 15000 yen.
Same with the other consulate locations in Japan.

| If there is no break between your old contract and your new contract you don't need to do a visa run, just get a letter of release from your old employer (you need this even tho that visa is ending) and then transfer your visa to your new school. |

Thanks again! Looking at the map osaka looks a bit far for a ferry trip so I guess I have to fly there. I was even thinking of maybe somehow going up to Hokkaido because its supposed be really pretty there but probably would be a nightmare getting my visa done.
Probably will stick with your idea about Osaka or Fukuoka. Osaka I read was quite active and had lots of the big lighted signs would be neat to see. Will do more research and thanks for all the tips again! Most appreciated! |

| I've heard good things about the Korean consulate in Hong Kong. Though airfare might make that prohibitive. |
