That's a bit of a misleading title- hes going to get the stick for committing fraud.

That's not what the article says. They just added the fraud charge.

Yeah, but chances are homeboy wouldn't get caned for overstaying alone. Brings me back to the days of living in Singapore where everything is against the law. Great thing is that I maybe saw a police officer twice the entire time.

If this were a law abiding citizen, I would have some sympathy. Further, if that had been the case, he probably could have gotten some leniency by saying it was unintentional.

However, this is clearly not the sort of circumstances that title would seem to suggest. He is very clearly a criminal minded person. And of course, he is giving Americans a bad name. So, I say give him the caning.

They enforce the laws. The punishments are unreasonable in many cases (such as 3 strokes for overstaying) but are applied equally. When in Singapore, follow the law.

So, all in all, would you two say it was a pretty good place to live and work?

What about going out and drinking and things like that? How is the club scene? Not that that's so important for me, but occasionally I like to get out and have a good time. Do the police hassle drinkers?

Leon, the police in public areas are undercover. That's the nefariousness of the system. You never know when a cop is around.

Yes. It is a great place to live and work. Singaporeans are great people. Taxes are low. The cost of living is reasonable (rent can hurt). The food is unbelievable. There is no street crime. Great airport with cheap flights all around Asia. It is a great country to live in. Lots of opportunity too. The humidity is a bit much.

Booze is expensive and the nightlife is lacking. If you're drunk in public and being a loudmouth or scrapping or similar you're going to have problems. Don't be the arrogant, loud mouth white guy and you won't have any problems at all.

I enjoyed the nightlife though. I found a few spots that I liked and stuck with them. I'm a Singaphile.

My feeling are almost exactly the same as Mises. The food is so cheap and so good. The people are great, and they speak English. It has all the modern conveniences, its clean and safe. It can get boring but there is always Malaysia or Indonesia near by for more culture, jungle and beaches for amazing prices. If you can take the heat, humidity, and the rain its one of the best places to live in my opinion. Booze costs are very high, higher than any where else I've been. It's hard not to spend a lot every time you go out but I always had fun and there are several nice places.
