Since 96 I've seen a vast array of different responses of oldies to newbies. It's hard for me to say what the most common response has been since there have been so many different ones.

Usually the newer ones, I'll show them where things are, where you can buy the things you need and I'll take them to a Korean restaurant for a BBQ and dong-dong-ju and soju.

Since I am a big believer in karma, and have lived in Korea for the past two years, anyone coming to me for help will be gladly helped. It's always good to try to make new friends, anyways. Smile

ALWAYS glad to help newbies - I was one once. Don't mind sharing as much insight as one is willing to tolerate. Though small doses tend to work best.

That said, however, I don't tend to get too close until I have some idea of the quality of the person's character. Too many newbies (and oldies too!) will try to make their problems - your problems - if you let them do it.

IMHO this occupation is more network-oriented than any other. I am happy to say that - fired tomorrow, I could easily find work in a variety of countries. And, any friends I have made in other countries - would find me helping them tomorrow if they needed work quickly. So, yes, it does pay to be helpful.

It's my nature to help. But a recent incident has made me wonder about expats here. If you don't kick sand in my face I will help. In the end life is about networks and it's important to learn that those who win are usually those who think about winning long term wars then short term wars.

Get very intoxicated and introduce them to the idea that a noraebang can be a fun thing.

All of the above except for D. When sober, they'll take newbies by the hand and show them around, and completely overload them with useful information like what games work best and how to throw out your garbage. Then they'll take the newbies out for drink after drink after drink and tell them all the horrible things about Korea. And the swear words. At least, this is the way it worked for me.

Newbies don't deserve help.....they always resent it after a while. I don't try to help them now....they can live or die.

Good idea.

I'm sure most people don't come to Korea to have their hand held by another foreigner, or to have some smart ass who has been here for a few months or a few years longer let them in on all the 'secrets'.

Don't deal with newbies at our school.

And if i come across some in the pub, then I wish them well and get back to playing darts.
