Hi, does anyone know what happened to BCM Language Centers? I've heard of them mentioned as a place to teach adults, but I'm finding a lot of their websites down and some of their ads pulled. What's up?

That's kind of creepy, because I just found an add of theirs on the job board from just about 3 weeks ago: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/posting.php?mode=reply&t=128429

I was offered a job at a BCM and the contract was so bad it was like it was written by Satan himself. Don't work at a BCM!

Like any chain, experiences differ branch to branch. I worked at a BCM junior for a year and had a good experience(standard contract). I find they rely too much on memorization and the job can feel like baby sitting at times.

Babysitting? Isn't it an adult hagwon?

The BCM Junior here is good and the teachers we know were always paid on time and enjoyed working their. They don't seem to be going out of business.

Just one part of what happened-I was already in Korea and I was doing an interview with the local manager of a BCM branch. In the contract, it read that I had to "pay for the cost of a round-trip airline ticket to/from Seoul to the USA" if I didn't finish 12 months. I requested that the clause be removed because BCM didn't pay to fly me to Korea, and the BCM manager refused to remove it from the contract and said I would have to pay them the cost of a flight if I didn't finish 12 months.
No way I was gonna sign that.
Others have told me the same things about BCM contracts, so be very wary about contract language.

Salary

Your salary will be paid in Korean won. Generally paydays are on either 15th or 25th day of each month, depending on the school, for work done during the previous month.

On the main page, click on English then on working conditions. That is a long time to wait go get paid.

I worked at one. If the school EXCLUSIVELY uses "Let's Chat", run like the wind.

I thought I had established a great relationship with my director. Then, 3 weeks before I left I found out that they had been deducting but not paying my taxes.

If someone is working from 6am to 10pm, they're foolish for excepting those hours (assuming the overtime rate that was in my contract).
