I don't want to scare you off from eating Kimchi at restaurants, but have you ever wondered whether some restaurants recycle the side dishes that you didn't quite manage to finish.

Well wonder no more, it's true, some do. One sure way to tell whether you have been served some twice, or thrice used baechu Kimchi, is to see if it's layered or not. If it's just piled haphazardly on a plate, you know somethings afoot and chances are this Kimchi has done the rounds.

Many Koreans avoid kimchi all together at the mom and pop cheap joints for just this reason. Also that nasty raw spicy crab that most people avoid, well I do anyway, has to have been recycled dozens of times and just put back out time and time again to make up the numbers.

Just something to think about. Hmmmmmmm

I know all the side dishes are recycled but i don't care.

People use their chopsticks to get the food so they don't really touch it. I usually have a look first and if it is one of the kimchi plates that has done the rounds i will ask for another one.

Sure they use their chopsticks, but think of the old geezer whose chim is dribbling into the Kimchi bowl, while he smokes and drops ash onto some other dishes. And the kid whose mother is trying to force some kimchi down his throat but he spits it back up and back into the bowl. Not to mention the constant coughing, throat clearing, hoiking and so forth. Not that appetizing anymore is it? Huh? is it? hahahha (Crazy maniacal laughing) Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Oh come on, I'm sure the waitresses only recycle it if it hasn't been obviously messed around with, torn apart etc. I don't really eat the stuff anyway, but it's not like you are going to have obviously previously consumed food being given to you at your table. Besides, if you're in doubt at all, just don't eat it! Problem solved.

I wouldnt go as far as saying k-food is "dirty" but I will say that some of the places that serve it are really unsanitary!

Agree 100% on this. Some of the places would be closed in a heartbeat in the west.

I generally use common sense and avoid the grotty, back-alley mom and pop kalbi houses due to this reason(plus who knows what the emat is like).

The newer ones are great.

And you know this how? Making silly unfounded accusations like this is just plain childish. How long have you been here? A week? A month? a year? Over 7 years and not once have I seen any side dishes recycled. Have friends who own resturants, they hate it when people don't eat them, because they go in the trash bags for farmers. And its a waste of money. Have you ever seen little pieces of rice or some liquid from soup in the side dish bowl? No? Thats because it's new.

It's only the nice new places that recycle, how else do they afford their building?

I have no idea about recycling of food. I do think that restaurants should try to come up with some ideas about food conservation though.

I think it is a sin when I leave a restaurant and there is so much food on the table for no reason.

My father always said when I was younger if I was wasting food "An Ethiopian would love to have that."

There are other issues such as wastage of land for useless production.

Wait what am I talking about? The food isn't wasted, it's recycled. Very Happy

I'm more concerned about the tongs at the kailbi restaurants that the adjumas use to serve you the cooked meat-

...which they've just lifted straight out of the pan of bleeding raw pork.

It's a wonder we're not all dead.

I'm not sure, but I think the main threat from pork is parasites, so it is just the parasite in the meat that has to be heated to death point.

I get worried about chicken at meat buffets... Shocked

Yes they re-serve the side dishes, not just the kimchee. We're all brothers and sisters here in Korea. It's kind of like leftovers at home.

pffft.
i'd prefer recycled to what i've seen.
ajoshis tending to vegetables while the cigarette hanging from their mouths drops right into a head of brochili.
or the ajuma who was hacking up her whole breathing cavity on top of her vegetables; nota pleasant site.

What arrogance! Good for you.
Well my wife has been here a lot longer than you, in fact she was born here. Generally Koreans avoid eating Kimchi in small places especially if it's just heaped in a mound. You can be sure that it's done the rounds before. For your information I have been here for more than 4 years and it's not an unfounded accusation. Ask a Korean who is a friend and not afraid to disparage their countrymen. You are naive to suggest that it doesn't happen due to your VAST experience in this country and the fact that you have several friends that own restaurants. Do you know how many restaurants are in Seoul alone competing for the won? Well do you? I'm sure Real Reality could fill us in.

I was in no way suggesting that all, or even the majority of Korean restaurants recycle uneaten food back out to the customers, but some do. Generally it's the small places struggling to survive in the competitive marketplace.

I just asked my wife if the small restaurants recycle.

Although Korean she does not have the final answer, but she said:

"Yeah, I suppose they would."

She didn't seem too concerned. I told her how dirty it is, and she said:

"Yeah, maybe."
