I will be moving there in March for a teaching position. What is the process for getting a cell phone. I'll only be there for a year, so I won't be able to sign a 2 year contract. Do they have 1 year cell phone contracts or pre-paid cell phones?

Once you have your ARC (ID card) and a bank book, walk into an LG store (called OZ) and show them to the guy/girl behind the counter. Point to the phone you want. Pick a price for your monthly payment. Pay for the phone. Walk out.

You will have to do either a one year contract or pre-paid, since you only have a one year visa. Generally the people in the store know this, but not always...you'd be suprised...You will definitely need to take a Korean co-worker or friend with you because it's a little more complicated than just pointing and asking. Their cell phone plans are structured differently than ones in the States so it will help to have them explain it to you.

i got a phone through my recruiter, adventure teaching, who runs this site:
http://thearrivalstore.com/sarp/views.asp?mcode=A&scode=&gCode=A050011&keytext=&page=1&sort=&ps=8
my boyfriend went to an LG store to get a phone.
i have found that my phone bill is cheaper than his and way easier to pay as adventure teaching emails me my bill every month and i just transfer the money to them and they take care of it!

This is absolute bull manure.

Seriously, I walked into LG, showed them my ARC and bankbook. They showed me a couple of basic phones (a smartphone will be more difficult) and told me the prices. The most expensive one was 60k. Then they asked me about plans. I picked the base price (plus a low per/minute cost) plan and that was it. They showed me where to sign and initial on a couple of pages.

You will not get ripped off. LG is very foreigner-friendly, they even have a call center that the employees can call if you have questions (don't ask me the number, I never called).

I got a SKY phone in my name on 1 year contract. It's like 20,000 a month for like 30 minutes a month, because I don't use the 3G phone for much more than a digital alarm clock and fancy pocket watch. I had to shop around for a month as most stores just turned me away. I had a Korean do the talking for me to negotiate it.

Agreed. I paid 100,000 for their most expensive phone at the time (the Cooky), and they gave me a year contract without issue despite only having 8 months left on my ARC at the time. Sure, a Korean probably could've gotten that phone for free with a two year contract, but that's not a bad deal, especially given the low cost of cancelling a plan here.
