My lack of IT knowledge shows here.

Purchased a notebook last year and there doesn't seem to be a switch for wifi like my laptop has.

Anyway thought there might be an automatic one built in be when I try to set it up the computer says no wifi connected.

Does that mean I have to buy some external wifi thingy to plug into the usb? If so is Yongsan the best place to get one or can I just get one from anywhere? And is the external wifi just like a usb or do I have to get some sought of antenna?

If your 'notebook' (aren't notebooks and laptops the same thing?) was made in the last 4 years then it almost certainly has built in Wi-fi....

What's the make and model?

FNC+F5. Some laptops have blue sub keys. ie, some keys have second functions that you activate by pressing the function key. Some more info would probably help, ie the make and model of your laptop.

I have the same notebook. Look at the little lights on the bottom right corner of the keyboard. What colors are they? If you have bluetooth on, there will be a blue light. There will be a yellow light to the left of it, if the wifi is on.

I'm pretty sure the key to toggle wifi on/off is fnc+F5. Check the light when you push those buttons. It should toggle on and off.

If not, you must have a hardware problem.

ok see the lights at the front. the first light is blue (0) and next to it is the yellow/greenie light with the picture of what seems to be a satelite - I pressed Fn - F11 - so I have assume I have blue tooth and now the wireless on but the computer says that wireless is not turned on

The first thing you should do is read the manual to check how to turn on wi-fi........

If you establish that you're doing the right thing to turn it on but it still doesn't work then you might need to re-install the driver. Get that from the manufacturers website. Download and install.

Yup, the wee satellite means wifi.

Is your network showing up in network connections?

Try restarting your router and checking all the plugs and stuff. Restart the laptop as well. I guess you have XP? I highly recommend upgrading to W7, as it is ace for all networking stuff.
