I'm going to Taiwan for Chuseok and have been told my itinerary is WAY too much for one week (specifically hiking Taroko Gorge). Any suggestions of what I should definitely do/leave out from my plans??
2 days Taipei
1 day Taroko Gorge and Sun Moon lake (is it possible to do both in a day?? I've heard the buses only run 3 days a week from east to west coast!!?? Is hitchhiking a viable option?)
1 day Tainan
1 day Kaohsiung
1 day Kenting
1 day Taipei
Should I just stick to traveling on one coast?? Any suggestions are welcome!! I want to see as much as I can while I'm there! Thanks |

I just got back from a week in Taiwan. I did Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Taipei (and also a day trip / tour to the Taroko Gorge). The first thing I would say is that your schedule might be possible, but not something that is going to be at all fun. You are going to be going all the time, and part of the fun I had in Taiwan was to taking time to do things that were not necessarily on the normal list of tourist sights.
You really should go to the Taroko gorge. It was one of the highlights of my trip. I did a day trip from Taipei, because I could not figure out how to fit into my schedule as a place to stay. I did the tour that is widely advertised online, which was fly to Hualein, tour the gorge, then train back to taipei. It was more expansive than if I did it on my own, but the connivence outweighed the cost and being forced to be on the pre-set tour. I would have liked more time there, but for what I wanted it worked for me. If you can figure out how to go, you should go.
Taipei was also at least two very full days, but more like 3 or 4 if you really want to see everything and if you want to spend any time at each of the sights. I really enjoyed the four days I spent in Taipei, and could have found more things to do if I had the time.
Koahsiung was nice, and it would be possible to do some of it in a day, but I found traveling to other towns takes a large chunk of time, even if it is only from like Koahsuing and Tainan.
Tainan was ok, but if I were to take anything out of my trip it would have been the day and a half that I spent in Tainan. The highlights were the Anping harbor and the temples, but I found that Taipei and Koahsuing has temples I enjoyed more.
I guess to sum up, yes you are trying to do way too much. |

Thanks so much for your advice! I will definitely reorganize my days so I have more fun, less stress and traveling time. I'm glad you enjoyed Taroko gorge. I am really looking forward to going there, and was bummed out when people advised I should cut it out of my trip.
So, it looks like my trip will be:
Taipei 3 days (Taroko for a day trip)
Tainan 1 day
Kaohsiung 1 day
And then 2 free days I can decide what to do while I'm there.
Thanks a million!! |

Yea, I wouldn't overplan. Leave some free time to relax. Also leave a free day just in case for weather. That way if you miss a day or part of it, you don't feel like you have missed out on something specific |
