hi guys. i have a friend who currently resides in china but wishes to come to korea to teach english. he is however from england and i was wondering how easy would it be for him to get a job considering most schools seem to prefer having a native speaker with an american or canadian accent. i just wanted your guys' input on this topic. also if you guys have any info on schools that would take a teacher with an english accent that would be very much appreciated.

we recently had a very good friend of ours pass away in china and so my friend wants a change of scenery. i suggested korea to him because a) i can hang out with him and b) he can get a new job that can help take his mind off our friend's passing. like i mentioned in my earlier post any info would be great. thanks all in advance.

The myth that Koreans now only hire pretty blonde haired North American females is just that, a myth. Your friend should be just fine.

I wish it were true though, there are not enough pretty blondes in Korea. :.(

Yeah, although there are some adverts that specify Americans or Canadians, I've never known any Brits have problems getting work here (and this includes plenty of Scots and Irish with thick accents).

Hi i'm a brit working in Korea. If anything there are way toooo many Canadians and Americans teaching in Korea. Take my example, i'm the only Brit working for my school amoung 12 other native teachers who are all American or Canadian. So just keep plugging away and you'll find the right position for you!

it is tougher but it's okay. he should be able to get something. i have had problems in the past. schools telling me to change my accent (which i didn't) i have also had schools tell me that they weren't hiring any more non north americans because they already had too many !! whatever that means. probably 1 is considered too many. it really just depends on how clued up the employer is. ive had foreign teachers and koreans tell me that my voice is very clear and easier to understand than north americans but ive also had korean interviewers completely confused by my accent !!

I had no trouble getting a public school job with SMOE and made friends with many other English people who also worked for SMOE. Even those with strong regional accents didn't seem to have a problem.
Your friend should be fine.

A very English centric comment. You could also include Geordie, Scouse, Birmingham, Cockney, and a dozen other 'thick' English accents which are every bit as befuddling as highland scots.

Mind you, the tweeny way some New Yorkers speak also requires a second take.

Many people from these regions also speak excellent neutral English from training or international exposure, so better not to generalise too much.

To anyone south of Watford the rest of the countryfolk aren't really Englishmen / Englishwomen: they are 'Northerners.' Which in our minds, is the same as being Scottish, Welsh or Irish.

I know it's ignorant and rude, but it's really how a lot of Southerners see it. Even Anglia is 'Northern.'

If I were British I could have all of Europe to teach in. However, I am American. I still, just in case, from time to time (over a period of 12 years) have sent all of my things to a nice looking teaching job in a French University. A few responded and told me that with my qualifications they would have loved to have me. However, they can't hire Americas. Sad Mad

PS: There are FAR TOO MANY native speaking English teachers in Korea no matter where they are from. What percent, for example, native speakers of French are French teachers in America?

No problem for the guy, just so long as he knows he's going to have to get back to the UK to sort out all his visa docs.

No doubt. Why would all these Brits come to SK if they could be in the EU teaching?

I think money is the only feasible reason. Maybe exploring Asia as a close second?
