Most importantly, they are saying that S. Korea is better to live in than France? Really? |

I'm a bit surprised since presumably it refers to citizens. But for expats I think it's a great place to live! I work regular hours, make decent money, food and transportation is cheap, and there's plenty of things to do. I have way more fun here than back in Canada. And despite being denser, I find Korean cities to be more livable than the suburbs of Canada. |

Still the 'Nuck anger to the Assies continues...
watching the CBC feed of the 2000 games showed a lot of resentment toward the Koala Nation.... I see it festers.... |

Suicides, stress, a lack of joy and safety, rushing around, insular and sometimes xenophobic thinking, a victim's mentality, groupthink, without much diversity or architectural beauty, high rate of alcoholism and stomach cancer, public displays of violence toward women and animals, there are many reasons to think the little Korean part of the world not as great a place as dozens of others, certainly more than it trails on that list.
However, South Korea is a relatively modern democratic country with lots of hi-tech, first rate infrastructure especially roads, low rate of violent crime, a stable economy, social order based on custom rather than heavy law enforcement, a dedication to education (a literate albeit slavishly textbookish culture), a climate free of tropical diseases and with - yes - four seasons however indistinct and unoriginal they are, it is refreshing compared to many countries, and there are relatively many opportunities to make a decent income and to travel compared to the majority of nations in today's world.
Out of over 200 countries, I'd put SK in the 20-40 range, depending on how factors are weighed. No way would I put it ahead of Italy, Spain or Portugal on any list of best places to live. |

Notice how Muslim countries don't fare well on these kinds of list. Malaysia at #37 is the top of the Islamic World even though one in four humans is of that civilization. |

Good economy, decent standard of living, decent education, running water, electricity, fast social change (could be a bad thing too), low crime, new and relatively stable democracy, relatively open society etc. Biggest issues is that big Northern gorilla on the back. If they could only free up costs associated with issues with their northern neighbor. Anyways, South Korea is definitely top 20 in my books, actually top 10, but that's just my opinion. |

I think Jana from Saskatchewan has this romantic notion about Europe.
Perhaps she lived in France for a while and loves the place, fair enough. But how are education, health, quality of life, economic dynamism and political environment? Do they have good health care?, public safety? a pumping economy?
I see my country was number 4. We have a fantastic quality of life, good economy, but try buying a house these days, catching a crowded train, dogging a knife wielding drug addict on a train station, waiting a year for elective surgery; most people are struggling to get by in Australia with rising costs.
I take these lists with a grain of salt. |

Just come from Europe, while France may have excellent food and amazing buildings and culture it also
has a high crime rate (several times i felt unsafe and once had my bag nearly snatched and I'm a decent sized guy),
Paris is dirty and smells of pee,
unemployment is high,
things are expensive,
service is shockingly bad and shops are never open |

It's not an Olympic competition so 15 vs. 16 doesn't really mean better. Take a look at the specifics and Korea comes ahead in some areas and France in others, and as a result Korea is one rank up but really anything within about two or three is more or less equal. |

Here is what is going to take Canada and Australia off those lists in the future: the geography is too big to support such a small population, and with the loss of the middle class, who is going to pay for all the social services? (I guess if they go less socialist, they can survive, but having equal status of living in an area with 100 people in the middle of nowhere and an area with 1mil+ in a thriving metropolis just doesn't make sense in the long term...)
I think Korea should be up there. They are advanced as fast as Canada is declining...pretty sad to say as a Canadian |

I'd much rather be here than in the UK, for a myriad of reasons. |

not surprised that finland, sweden and switzerland are in the top three.
those are the most expensive countries in europe, but you also get your moneys worth. their life quality is just superb there.
for god's sake i would even move there in a blink of an eye and im not a bit europe fan... |
