After a long time of far too much effort, red tape, annoyingness, and other headaches I'm finally here in Korea (going on two days) Life is pretty strange, however I am enjoying it so far. Thank god I had friends here to greet me and more importantly my girlfriend also ^^ . People at the hagwon I work at seem friendly and nice. I'll go in to work tomorrow and probably will go to the hospital for my medical check? I really have no idea what I'll be doing. We shall see. I'm located in Youngtong dong Suwon and things seem very nice - like a good sized city. Doesn't seem too huge like I was weary about to be in Seoul, however I haven't been to downtown Suwon. Regardless, I just wanted to express my joy and thank people on this forum for the countless amounts of knowledge and aid given that's helped me be here typing this today.
Cheers,
David
PS - Can anyone recommend a place to learn Korean at a hagwon or school/university in Yeongtong-dong / Suwon area for me?
Thanks. |

You got friends and a girlfriend in advance? How exactly?
Suwon is dirty dirty. But cool. It's near Anyang so it MUST be cool. |

Just a hunch, and I may be completely out of left field on this one, but he met his friends and GF back in his home country. |

I'm planning on starting Korean classes at the YMCA in yongtong. Every saturday, 10-12.
Don't know a whole lot about it yet, but my friend thinks its around 85 for 3 months, plus 35 for a book. |

Yeongtong-dong seems very pleasant to me. The friends and girlfriend, yes indeed, were made in my home country
I am looking into the YWCA for language classes but would like to be taking more classes than just once a week. I am serious about my learning. My girlfriend is looking into things for me here, however if anyone has suggestions it is appreciated. |

Ajou University does Korean classes, but that's all I know.
It's a very well-respected univesrity. |

Try language exchange. There are a couple sites. Google this "site:http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/ language exchange"
A popular site is
http://www.hanlingo.com/
Just be sure to put on your profile that AREN'T looking for a girlfriend. (Some people use the site like a dating site.) |

I'm pretty sure Kyunghee University has Korean classes, with a fairly intensive schedule too. I never went myself but I remember some former colleagues attending. Kyunghee Uni is just behind Home Plus, much closer than Ajou. |

You are not 'Finally Here' until you have spent a night drunk on a minimum of 3 bottles of soju and walked your whole neighborhood sampling the snacks at every pojang macha you come accross (including the chicken buttholes on skewers, oh yes..!) and being involved in pidgin Engish / pidgin Korean conversations with at least 3 groups of adjoishis, peed in an alleyway and then got lost walking home and when you do get home it takes you 25 minutes to remember the code to your door. |

Totally agree!
That's when you know you've landed. |

I might include a few hours of sleeping on the subway in that one. |

that's interesting. This means the last several years I actually have not been here. Even though I have.
I'm confused.
I've stumbled home fairly sloshed on soju after some coworker dinners with norebangs after etc but have never "experienced" the other stuff. |
