Hello all. i want to travel to china for my summer vacation. i'm hoping to go for 7 days (we'll see how much time the bf gets off). has anyone been there/lived there that has any tips for me? what to see, what not to see. also, i'll be going from korea, so any advice on travel agents, tours, would be welcome. i'm assuming doing a tour thing would be more expensive, so i'd rather do my research beforehand and do it myself. is this possible or recommended? thanks.

I'm going to China next month.
Tip number one, bring an extra suitcase. Things are dirt cheap there. Clothes, DVD's, CD's, are all around 80% cheaper than in Korea. All the money you save buying those things is worth the price of the plane ticket alone.
Beijing has the most attractions. You have to see the Great Wall. You can also go to the Summer Palace, and the Forbidden City. See where the tanks rolled in Tianemenn (sp?) Square.
If you want beaches, kick it for a few days up in Dalian.
I don't know anything about group tours. I'm paying around 385,000 won for a plane ticket at the end of May. It's probably higher in tourist season. |

China is very big and you will have to decide what you want to see.
Beijing is great because you can see dead Mao, The Great Wall, Tiananmen, and other cool stuff.
Shanghai is great because you can get to Hangzhou and Suzhou by train easily, and all three are beautiful cities. I would recommend this trio for a week. Shanghai has the Bund, historical Communist stuff, and some big city flavour. Hangzhou has the best tea in China, and famous West Lake. Suzhou is a beautiful garden city, or a city with some beautiful gardens.
I suppose you may also want to do Tibet.
You can't do it all in seven days. |

| I went to China for 10 days. I had a totally different experience than most people, because I didn't see any of the tourist stuff, like MAOs head bobing in a bottle of etherine...etc. I wrote a blog, it's in Korean, but you can figure out a lot from the pictures: http://geocities.com/pagodateacher/china/o.htm |

Phaedrus gave some excellent advice. The Shanghai, Hangzhou and Souzhou is magic. It's also a damn site cheaper than the whole Beijing thing and Bejing in summer is hot, crowded and polluted. Winter is a better time. Thouroughly recommend Shanghai. |

hELLO sISTER...(Caps lock off).....One thing you could do is sail from Inchon to Qingdao...Would take 18 hours or so but Qingdao is a spectacular coastal city. (I am near there now)...
Another option is to avoid the East coast altogether and fly to Kunming or Chengdu...Thet are in the south close to Vietnam ---or go straight to Tibet is another option.
I would say avoid the big 3 cities-Canton Beijing and Shanghai and look at other places. At this point it will be HOT everywhere. |

I actually found my time in Beijing to be cheaper than both Suzhou and Shanghai. Suzhou is a great city to visit though. It's much cleaner than Beijing and if you only give it 2 or 3 days you won't feel like you've missed out on anything crucial. |
