|
|
Hi there, my friend is hoping to come to Korea and teach with EPIK next year in Feb, but I am wondering about the medical test - she had hepatitis A 2 years ago and is now cured and immune to it. She is scared to write anything on her form about this, in case she is rejected because of it, but she is also worried about failing the medical test. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks! |

That's like saying she had chicken pox. Hep A is not a serious problem (like Hep B), and once you've had it, you can't get it again. I would say it's not a problem at all, and it doesn't even merit mentioning. I just had my medical check the other day and there was nothing on there about Hep A. |

Great! Thanks so much! So the medical check only covers hepatitis B then? |

I'm not entirely sure what it covers. I just had mine, and they breezed through it with me. I know that it covers drugs, HIV, and Hep B. The only reason I knew about the Hep B was I asked what a particular line was that had a lot of writing and it was the Hep B line. Generally speaking, if you're healthy and don't have an incurable disease, you'll be fine on the med check. |

There doesn't really seem to be a completely standard test, different hospitals/clinics do slightly different tests. For last job I was tested for Hep A and B and their antigens (i.e. immune response, which can be from either vaccination or natural response after recovering from infection). This job I was only tested for Hep B and it's antigen. As such they may or may not test her for it, but it shouldn't matter; if she had Hep A, and has since recovered, she won't test any different than somebody who was vaccinated for Hep A, unless she has a persistant infection (which I believe is extremely rare for Hep A.)
So I it doesn't matter. As to whether or not she should omit it from her health questionairre, I guess that's an ethical question, given how recent it was I would say she's obligated to include it, but I have no idea if that could cost her the job. |

Thanks so much for the replies! I think she is going to go ahead an apply. But just for piece of mind - what are the EXACT tests needed for the visa? Then perhaps she could just demand to have only those ones done. Thanks! |

Do they test for HIV? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have any STDs, but never bothered to actually get tested. |

There is also a drug test, and from what i have read recently canabis is now tested for. Having worked in a drug charity in the UK, i can tell you that casual use (once a week usage) can be detected for 30 days after use (even longer if they test your hair) and if you are a stoner, then up to 90 days. So if you are partial to a smoke, knock it on the head.

Has anyone ever been misdiagnosed with Hepatitis C on the medical check?
I was misdiagnosed with Hepatitis C once by a Korean doctor (not in Korea). When I went to the SOS clinic their best guess was that the K doc misinterpreted my "fatty liver" as Hepatitis C.
Anyone? |

He'd have to be a pretty stupid doctor to make that mistake. More likely it was just a false positive on the blood test, as that blood testing is the only conclusive test for Hep C. False positives happen for various diseases and can happen for any number of reasons including equipment contamination, tech errors, misread results, etc. He if didn't do any blood test and diagnosed you with Hep C the guy is either stupid, or crazy, or both. |
