Have you ever taught your students any unusual songs?

The other day some of my younger male students were talking about dynamite.....so I decided to teach them the chorus to AC/DC's T.N.T.

"CHORUS:
'Cause I'm T.N.T. ...I'm dynamite
T.N.T. and I'll win the fight
T.N.T. I'm a power load
T.N.T. watch me explode"

...they love it. Cool

Sometimes I'll bring in some song lyrics and leave out a few of the words. The students listen to the song and fill in the missing words. They usually like it. They got a big kick out of John Lennon's 'Mother' - "This is not English." "Is he singing?" Is he hurt?".

I think maybe the White Stripes, "Fell in love with a Girl", is the most unusual song I do. A buck 41 of sheer power and speed, if they make any sense of it, then you know their listening is pretty good.

I taught my kindergarten kids a couple of songs
My Girl, Beautiful Sunday...but their favorite songs are ABBA.

Last summer I tutored a group of high school kids (for free, 'cause Sparkles is for the children, and I like corrupting Korean youth), and one time I put on The Clash's first album. One kid was absolutely amazed and refused to believe it when I told him it was released in 1977.

Blew his damn mind. Then, another kid asked me what they were singing about. I explained a couple of the songs. They were most impressed with "I'm so bo-or-ored with the U-S-A!", I think.

Nothing so good as rock or anything...

Though my kids doing the hokey-pokey is ridiculously funny.

I am considering bringing American movies and music into the classroom... I've been a little gun shy about it as I am concerned my "mountain woman" of a boss won't like it, but who knows.

On Friday, my best class gets to watch "My Fair Lady"... seriously, what's funnier than teaching an English woman to speak English? (That and the costumes at the racetrack are hilarious)

I'm not sure how to incorporate music into lessons... one day after a field trip to Lotte World, I was sitting in the front seat of the hagwan bus with my director's youngest daughter and we each took one side of my headphones and listened to my mp3 player on the way back. She enjoyed the music.

oh i also taught one of my classes "Summer Nights"
I had the boys sing the boys parts and visa versa.
It was pretty funny when the boys say about getting dirty down in the sand Razz

As few as possible.

I only sing when I am on the tail end of several bottles of soju in some seedy norae-bang down some dodgy alley in the middle of an area where you have no idea to get home.

Kids don't frequent these places.

A few KMFDM songs.... "Godlike" and "A Drug Against War" stand out.

Some Morrissey.... "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "Everyday is Like Sunday" come to mind...

If students say that they like hip hop, I play 'em some Outkast, Public Enemy, or Wu Tang Clan just to see if they really like hip hop. In the past I've played Sonic Youth, White Stripes, Polyphonic Spree, Yo La Tengo, Slayer, and The Flaming Lips. My rule is, never play the students a song that I wouldn't enjoy listening to myself.
