Lived in Korea for 10+ years (grew up around Koreans as well). For some reason, when I've tried throughout the years to join, the forum gods didn't smile upon me. So I felt I'd try again. Yea! Smiled upon'd.

So, a question to start things off on a good foot:

What have you done with the money you've saved here in Korea, besides paying off the debt monster? I've read about some people buying houses. I knew a guy in the late 90s who did tons of privates, bought a couple of cars and other things. I thought that was pretty cool.

Well, nice to be here, and I hope I can join in some good conversation about this land that hosts some of us.

Welcome!!!

Good question. I know a guy that works for my company that has bought two houses that he rents out back in his country with the money he has made here. Pretty sweet.

I made it out of my student loan debt (Canadian...) a few months ago and am now saving to start doing the same. A few sweet trips planned too.

I tried for a LONG time too. Kept emailing telling them that this is racism against caucasians and whatnot. ended up just signing up with my other email address and it worked.

Been here 6 months and I've spent almost all my money on building up my little music studio. Hardly a studio, just like, a PC, Keyboard etc.
Oh and a trip to thailand.

I have debts but England doesn't really enforce it too well. As long as I pay about 70p a month or something they are unable to take any action. I'm not playing with god, I just want to enjoy having money for myself for a while before i have to start paying for crap.

(Never had a full time job before this, being in education all the time...I'm that young)

In brief form (I was in Korea from 1997 to 2008):

- Bought a house in Canada and rented it out, it was paid in well under 10 years.
- Bought a revenue generating rental building in Canada, paid it off in less than 10 years too.
- Bought an appartment in Busan and sold it for profit later
- Started a consulting agency (using some of the savings)
- Cleared all my debts after 2 years in K-land
- Advanced my retirement plans by at least a decade if I want to through investments and use of my disposable income.

It's somewhat difficult to join this forum. It was intentionally designed that way, for keeping out the lesser intellectuals. As you scroll through the pages, it's obvious that you are now among the elite. Welcome aboard.

Dont know if paying off student loans and saving tons of cash is as easy as it would have been in the past. Higher cost of living and bad exchange rate is quickly bringing those days to a halt. Wish I had of gotten here much sooner.

I used to post a lot on the old forum, but after it changed then it was near impossible to sign up. I used to apply every couple years without success. I only got approved recently. That's probably only because I kept repeatedly writing to Dave himself asking to be approved.

But welcome to the club all the same!

When I arrive in Korea I plan on living well, traveling a lot and if i can save a little money, well, that will be alright too! I am definitely NOT going to be pinching pennies the way some folks do. I have lived very well in the U.S. and I hope to do the same in Korea. Now that I am divorced I think I can maintain the style of living to which I have grown accustomed to in Korea far easier on my own than if I stayed in the U.S.

Ooh, tell me more about this endeavor. I make House/Dance music and want to know how much it's going to cost/be a pain in the butt to get a decent setup going.

Well.... that depends. I got my computer for 1 million from some guy on dave's who makes them himself, and the mic and keyboard will differ depending on your haggling skills in insadong.

The prices are gonna depend rapidly on what software you want too... For house I suppose you'd want Stylus RMX for $300 ish - drums but EXCELLENT.
Also Absynth, Trilogy Bass, Fm8, Omnisphere and the production system, from Nuendo to protools...

I suppose a personal set up on average would be around 1000-2000 frugal living like me. (2.5 million won?)

Over the years I've aquired a lot... If you're into classical music and such too then the stuff I've got is great. In fact, Lemme PM if I can figure out how.

Right on Hotwire.

Maybe some of these people who seem to buy "a house in Canada" every year have been skipping out on their bartabs and owe you some money?

The secret to getting an account at Dave's is to get banned for a TOS violation. Those guys seem to be able to get new accounts every few weeks and keep coming back ad nauseum. Laughing
