|
|
All the hakwan's pc's being on same network / isp - is it technically possible for them to monitor emails I send? Is gmail protected etc?
Reason I ask is we had a big fishing trip this weekend and I said I would go and acted enthusiastic etc as I am relatively new here.
I wrote an email to a friend saying I don't usually go on work trips and that I hope I don't get asked silly questions about fishing in my country and if Korean fishing is better etc and stuff like that that koreans usually ask me. I said I had low expectations of having a good time but maybe that was a good thing as I'd probably then end up enjoying it despite my low expectations etc.
Then a few hours later the trip was cancelled and the reason was that the weekend teacher wasn't coming in so the boss had to come in and work those classes.
Possible I guess, but being the only outsider in a group can make anyone overly self conscious which is how I may be thinking about this.
I wrote the email and signed out of my account. Is it technically possible that
A. They could on a screen in their office see whatever I am doing on my screen in real time?
B. They could record everything written on some monitoring device / software and websites surfed etc and later read the emails I sent after I had sent them despite my having logged out of my email account?
C. Some other method?
D. Not possible, silly me?
Thanks for considering my post. |

Yes it's possible but I highly doubt it.
I used to work in a major company and if they really wanted to they could gain access to anything I did (my best friend was in the IT dept at the same company). Unless there was some special software on the computer recording everything (keystroke loggers are easy enough to implement unnoticed, but a real pain to sit there and read through) I don't think a hakwon would have something that sophisticated anyway.
Someone here can probably shed a lot more light on it than me, I'm just highly doubting it had anything to do with a personal email you wrote from gmail.
Although you should always remember, when you're using someone elses computer, you don't have any right to privacy as it's not your equipment so if you're really that worried, don't send anything you don't want your boss to read. I personally would think they have better things to do. |

Yeah, like I said it's just tough being the only forinegner amongst 200 Koreans all day long, so small things become big things etc.
Guess you are right, it is work and it is their property, so if I want privacy I can have that at home.
I do feel they should let people know if they are being monitored in any business though. If not, well that just oversteps the boundaires of encroaching on personal freedom for me, but that's another thread! |

Don't get me wrong, I am on your side when it comes to personal freedoms. But even in the USA, the law gives employers total control over content on company owned computers, including personal emails, though I am not sure if that includes personal email accounts, or just company accounts.
Anyway, I doubt your school would cancel a trip like that for everyone just because one person(you) expressed low expectations. |

on a different note, If you don't want to do something, say no. Saying you want to do something and secretly loathing it is a recipe for disaster. Better off to be honest |

All you need to do is install a keylogger. If you're worried bring your own laptop or use your iPhone. |

Actually I would like to bring my own laptop so i free up our 2 pc's in the teacher's room for my coworkers.
There are only the two wall plugs to plug the LAN wire into though. Do computer stores sell double headed jacks (like the headphone jacks you can get to plug 2 sets of headphones into for music etc) so i could plug the pc and my laptop into the same socket? |
