|
|
Nearly one out every 10 couples standing in front of the wedding altar in Korea today is saying "I do" in a different language. That is because inter-racial marriages for Koreans - who pride themselves in the unbroken 5,000-year-history of their homogeneous population - have drastically increased in recent years. Last year alone, 25,658 Koreans tied the knot in the country with foreigners, according to latest data released by the National Statistical Office. According to the NSO statistics, 6,444 Korean women married foreign men last year. NSO statistics also show that last year 19,214 Korean men were registered in inter-racial marriages.

Great news. The landslide has begun, long may it continue.
We all need to mix it up in this world. Especially Koreans. |

I wonder how those figures are gathered. If they are just measuring marriages between those of different nationalities, it would not pick up all the kyopo/Korean citizen and ethnic-Korean Chinese (or Japanese)/Korean citizen marriages. |

I don't want to make this a hobby-horse or sound like some kind of obsession- it's not- but I saw some numbers on rigged marriages to get women out of the country and cash into several persons pockets and the numbers are quite high. GI's are used in this scam. So- don't anybody get too excited- I think that the trend might be tied to the growing want of getting out of the country and immigrating/divorcing in another. Perhaps at the end of the day it's not about love as much as citizenship and a new/old form of human trafficking.
As for those who do love\did love- I recall something about stats claiming that only 1\8 Korean\Waegook marriages survive in the long run. Far below the new trend of 50\100 between nationals. |

I read once that only 2% of people marry someone from another country....
That figure is old now but I think teh Korean reluctance is not that uncommon worldwide.
Many inter racial couples break because of the pressure involved long befor the 'I do' stage...
As a divorced man - maybe a change to 'I'll try, we'll see' or 'I might' would be more honest...

Wasn't it something like 13,000 of those marriages were Korean men with Chinese women? I think that is what the report said.

60% were Korean men marrying Chinese women.
Its not the western mans dream as that proportion was very small(under 10% of the interracial marriages).
RR, you are distorting the facts |

Don't forget stadiums filled with 30,000 followers of the Moonie. They are all inter-national/racial....strategically so.
Shoosh,

In the case of korean men marrying foreign women it's more because of the gender inbalance. Alot of older korean men (especially farmers) can't get a Korean wife so they go through the Moonies church to set them up with women from all over Southeast Asia. It's in alot of cases pretty disgraceful what goes on in the moony related marriages. |
