I'm SUPER close to buying an iPod Touch because I'd like a standalone media player, but would it be worth dropping $280 (for the 32gb model) if I have a Galaxy S? |

why the need for a standalone player? unless of course your leaving soon but...
if your here for a while wouldnt u be best just getting the galaxy s with 16gb internal mem and then adding a further 16gb (u could add 32gb later but thats expensive at the mo)
galaxy s is actually more versatile in media support and can play back avi and 720p mvk files...just drag and drop from your computer. easy as no conversion necessary. |

What does an iTouch do that a Galaxy can't?
I'm thinking that would be a super-frivolous purchase, BB.......but hey, if you want a new toy!!! |

The Galaxy is dare I say, the much better of the two media players.
While audio/video quality is subjective, with a nice set of headphones my Galaxy sounds far better than my second gen Iphone. Apple products can't even drive most high-end headphones, I've read nothing to say that the newer gen itouches improve on Apple's typically average at best sound quality. Samsung MP3 players have traditionally been among the best rated for sound quality, so this is not surprising. As mentioned it also plays just about every format of video possible without conversion and without needing itunes. You can access it from any computer via USB or simply load stuff onto a microsd card (another huge Apple don't). As an added bonus the screen is considerably larger (a half inch buys you a lot more screen real estate). It's a matter of preference whether or not the super amoled screen on the Galaxy is better than Retina display.
Unless you are in love with Itunes it's simply pointless. You may want to carry the second battery with you if you're going to be using it as a phone and media device for extended periods of time without having access to a charger or computer as it can charge over USB though. |

I guess that settles it, then!
Thanks for the advice.
I just don't know about how to go about adding media files to my Galaxy; I am smart phone mentally deficient. I guess I'll Google some tutorial.
In any case, have any of you guys put media onto a secondary external SD? I read something about how if you purchase anything less than a Class 6 SDHC card, your media will lag? Any info about this? |

You literally just stick the media files straight onto the micro sd card, doesn't matter how you organize them. The Galaxy will read the contents and organize them accordingly when you access the media players. It could not be any easier. It will also recognize album art that's usually included when you download a cd. I simply have a folder called music for which I dump in all my albums (each album is in a sep folder with its art) and one for video.
Mine is an 8gb class 4 micro SD card and I've noticed zero lag. |

No problem. I would like to add that I do have the new Samsung YP-R1 (8 gb model) in addition to my Galaxy and that little player has the best sound quality I've ever heard from a portable (better than their previous YP2 and P3 touches even). Samsung's DNSe is really amazing but they haven't worked it into their phones yet. It's a 2.5" touch screen so kinda small (the unit is about the size of a credit card and not much thicker) and I never use it when I have my Galaxy on me BUT, it's great for when I go jogging or workout which is why I bought the damn thing. It's touch screen as well. It also plays any video format you can throw at it and I got it for 140K at Yongsan. A heck of a lot cheaper than an ipod touch and would result in a lot less clutter in your pocket than carrying around an itouch and galaxy if you're still liking the idea of a standalone player. |

I have both at the moment and I would suggest getting an 8GB version of itouch because
1- it's cheaper
2- you can play media better on Gals
3- itouch is only useful for games that you dont get on Gals. all other apps are available on droid market or torrents
4- in 1.5 years of having 32gb model of itouch, even when I watched movies and had 50+ games installed, I never went over 8gb of usage...at the moment it's at 4 gb because I installed some mp3s, but since Gals is better at that, I'm thinking of erasing them |

So you're advocating that he buys an Ipod Touch (and would thus be carrying around both all of the time) not for media (as you mentioned, the Galaxy is the better of the two media players), but for some games he can't get on his Galaxy?
That's an absurd waste of money IMO. The Galaxy has a very satisfying app market that's growing rapidly, I'm sure there's more than enough to keep him entertained. |
