So i visited Fukuoka for a few days, it was the third time i had been there but the first time alone (the last 2 times with the g/f).
Anyway, I was surprised how different the Koreans are to the Japanese. You can pick them a mile away.
The ajummas with their sun-visors and their bali-bali attitude vs. the more elegant older Japnese grandmother.
The K-girls with their Loius Vittion fake bags and plain fashions compared to the crazy fashions of the J-girls.
I wish Koreans could take thier cues from the Japnese sometimes when it comes to human interaction, they just have so much more grace and style about them.
I had been in japan many times in the past but this was the first time i really noticed the differences between the 2.
I like Korea, it isn't a bashing Korea post just it was interesting to see 2 countries so close in geographical proximity yet just poles apart in attitudes in behaviours. |

Give Korea a decade or two. Japan was just as boring in the 1980s. |

I agree Icons with that 100%.
Just pointing out an observation of how obviously different the two are.
Give Korea some time and wait for the older generation to die out. It will not transform but definantly change some opinions and attitudes. |

Koreans are definitely better looking. I've noticed that at the airports in Taipei and osaka. Who cares if they dress less outrageously. they have better bone structure, and thats what counts. |

The Korean bone structure is the reason why I don't find most of the women here the least bit attractive. |

When I lived in Busan in 1996-1997.. it was all the rage for the older men to wear clashing plaid colors of either green, brown or yellow. So perhaps green plaid pants with clashing brown plaid shirts and a clasing yellow plaid jacket.
They were extremely easy to pick-out on Japan visa runs.. could see them a mile away..
I always wonder what the Japanese thought when they saw them. |

I was once in an electronics store in Fukuoka when this guy walks right in front me and stands in my way as Im looking at something on the shelf. I think to my self that this has to be the rudest Japanese guy I have ever seen then he starts speaking Korean to his friend.
On a side note. Spent 3 days in Japan, saw no one peeing outside. Get back to Korea and see 3 guys peeing in full view of everyone in the 1.5 hours from Busan to Daegu. |

Hate to get off of the old korean women vs japanese women chestnut..
BUT as a guy..
I don't like spending money on clothes, but when I'm in Japan I see heaps of stuff I'd love (if I could afford it)
Korean men's fashion is freaking awful.. |

Totally! Sometimes I just want to go shopping for clothes and I can't find anything, except for sportswear and those tacky golf-shirts that scream 'ajjossi'.
I'll give them their dress shoes (but certainly not their runners), their cult-like addiction to sportswear, Adidas, Nike, Reebok, etc...but that's about it.
Mind you, just about anything looks good on a Korean woman, IMHO. Everytime I see a K-girl walking down the street, dressed casually in ball cap and sportswear, coming back from the bathhouse with their sauna bags...YOW! |

I was very amused to note that whereas the OP says about Koreans in Fukuoka
"You can pick them a mile away"
then later adds
"I had been in japan many times in the past but this was the first time i really noticed the differences between the 2"
Sorry, OP, for being a bit anal there, because having said that, in many cases I wouldn't disagree with the point being made. I find Koreans in Japan fairly easy to spot. Facial appearances are a start and even if that doesn't give it away, fashions and mannerisms are often different too. Koreans themselves also find their compatriots here easy to spot, however you might be surprised that Japanese in the vast majority of cases actually fail to pick the Koreans out. I have many Korean friends here who are very, very often initially thought of as Japanese.
I find Korean fashions are different in that they tend to be more conservative. Japanese can be more adventurous, but at the same time, there are an awful lot of what you'd call "fashion victims" here in Japan.
I know some on this thread and a lot of westerners generally express surprise that things should be so different. But I think the surprise may be largely due to our own naivety in the first place in expecting them to be just the same or similar. Personally, I remember how different fashions, mannerisms and general appearances looked when going from Britain to Germany. I now see equivalent kinds of differences between what I can see in Korea and Japan. |

I have real trouble finding anything I like in the menswear departments here, its diabolical... quite often I'm drawn to the stylish, colorful womens racks of clothes...they get all the decent stuff. We men get a load of sh*te selections. |
