I thought that the conference would have been more beneficial to those attending if they had more carefully organized the presentation schedule. I was interested primarily in speaking and writing presentations and on Saturday, it seemed that they scheduled most of the writing presentations at the same time (1:30pm). Being that I couldn't be in five places at the same time, I had to choose one and I couldn't see the other presentations at a later time. Sort of disappointed.
It would be nice if KOTESOL video taped all the presentations and offered them to members on the website. |

Website problems seem to curse KOTESOL
I think KOTESOL would like to record all of the presentations and put them online, but many of the presenters would be likely to object to this. The famous ones might have contractual obligations with their publishers that prevents free online access to their presentations, other presenters might be camera-shy and still others might be reluctant to have their presentation recorded because they like to take the same presentation around the traps a few times.
I hear people complaining about presenter fees, and I suppose it does seem counter-intuitive for presenters to pay more than attendees. However, the presenter fees at KOTESOL are cheaper than other international conferences I have presented at (ThaiTESOL, Philippines Assoc. Language Teachers, English Teachers' Assoc. Taiwan). Presenters do get more benefits than regular attendees (lounge, snacks, banquet, computer / printing services, streamlined on-site registration and maybe some other stuff that escapes me) They also get to attend any of the presentations they want. for many of us, presenting at KOTESOL it is a good experience to help us hone our craft, and we get to put it on our resumes. So, maybe it is worth the extra few bucks after all. |

I concur with hoss- they should space the related lectures out a bit more so those interested can visit them. Happened when I went to Daejeon too.
The website was poorly constructed. Several parts seem to cut words out mid-sentence. |

| Lots of Lisa-esque "Meh"s with a few Homer-esque "boooriing"s would be my reply. Some decent ones, but not worth the entrance fee, IMHO. |

My 2 cents... I enjoyed it and got a lot, as I do each year.
Thumbs up:
-Krashen's plenary
-Chuck Sandy
-Thomas Farrell
-Folse's writing activities
-Heidi Vande Voort Nam's techniques for monitoring comprehension
-Shannon Tanghe's professional development
-seeing other professional teachers
-seeing friends
-free books and calendars
Thumbs down:
-rain
-2 presentations sucked but I don't want to call them out by name
-7,000 won for a sandwich?!
-website
-Just 45 minutes for Krashen but 30 minutes for the opening ceremony
-that darn hill! |

Was Farrell better on Sunday? Saturday he was a "meh" for me. Good ideas, but poorly presented. |

Yes, but most were shown in his Great Writing textbook series, so you may not fully understand the ideas here:
Timed writing - Instead of homework, have them write in class. Also, you dont have to check it every time, hand it back the next week and have them read it.
Grammar what have they shown they NEED, rather than what is prescribed by a book
Vocabulary - Word associations, collocations
Varied Sentences combining sentences in a variety of ways
Example
1. Good writers spend hours each day doing some things.
2. They develop their vocabulary skills.
3. They develop grammar skills.
4. They do this to enhance their language skills.

I didn't see him on Saturday, but I liked his presentation on Sunday. It was about how teachers interact with students and becoming aware of how, who, when, etc. we interact (with). Videotape yourself and you'll be surprised (was the idea.) |

Thanks, I used that series of books for years for my writing classes, but have recently changed this semester. Still use his series for additional examples for my students from time to time. |

Would rather hear good ideas poorly presented than the other way around. Some of these guys get up there and try to entertain too much. Of course, a combination of the two would be ideal. He was probably a bit jetlagged, as he is very solid in both areas as you know. |
