I just bought a Cowon S9 second hand, and the first thing I did, of course, was connect it to my computer and do a test file transfer. I successfully transferred a video and some flash games, however when I tried to "safely remove" the device, I got an error message saying another program or process was using it. Not wanting to corrupt the device, I powered down my computer and unplugged the S9 afterward. Thinking something may have been wrong with the player (and also just wanting a fresh start), I then attempted to format it. However, I'm still getting similar "in use" error messages.

This drive is in use. Another program or process is using this drive. Do you want to format it anyway?

Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.

The same thing happens to another cheapo flash drive I have. I originally thought the problem was device-side, but with the S9 suffering the same problems I'm fairly certain the problem must be computer-side.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and this is the list of processes running:

Quote:
avgtray.exe *32
csrss.exe
dwm.exe
explorer.exe
firefox.exe *32
iTunesHelper.exe *32
jusched.exe *32
NMBgMonitor.exe *32
NMIndexStoreSvr.exe *32
nvvsvc.exe
plugin-containter.exe *32
RAVCpl64.exe
taskhost.exe
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe

I tried googling this first, however all of the advice I found amounted to little more than "Just yank the cord out; it probably won't hurt anything." I forgot to eject my my old iPod once and yanked the cord out as per that advice and ended up corrupting the device. I would rather not have to fall back on that "solution."

As for the formatting issue, all of the tech sites I searched dealt specifically with partitions and formatting, making them less than helpful for my situation. I should say, however, that even though I got these error messages, when I checked my S9 the next day it apparently actually did get formatted successfully. But now I don't know if I should just ignore the other night's error messages or be worried that the format may have corrupted the device. So far, however, music, videos, and flash apps are working fine on it.

the file system for the s9 is fat32 which is non-journaled. so if you yank it out as long as there is no read/write activity going on, you're good. as for the error message about the device being in use when trying to eject it, you can try this program called usb safely remove
