Do you recommend keeping health insurance in the US in addition to having the Korean insurance while teaching for a year, or is the Korean plan good enough and health care cheap enough that i don't really need to keep my (expensive ) US insurance?
Let me know asap please. thanks!

I wouldnt bother keeping both for the year, but I might wait until I confirmed my new employer has actually enrolled me in the korean national plan before I cancelled the US insurance. Would that insurance even cover you internationally?

Here is what you should know:

Korean National Health Insurance is extremely insufficient on its own. It is absolutely necessary to have emergency medical travel insurance as a supplement to the Korean National Plan.

I have spent a lot of time in Korean hospitals so I can draw on that experience.

If I were you, I would keep some kind of insurance plan still going in the states while you are teaching in Korea.

Those who only rely on the Korean National Plan to look after their health are, in my opinion, foolish.

You don't want to end up on Facebook begging people for money to pay for your medical bills in Korea like others have done. (ie Bill Kapoun)

From what I understand, there is a difference between traveler's insurance and ex-pat. insurance.

You're an Expatriate, not a traveler, and if you are living and working abroad, you'll want Expat insurance.

I haven't confirmed this, but it is my understanding that Travel insurance does not cover people who are legally living and working abroad. Is this correct?
