It's a pretty small city. Population is about 150,000. That may seem like it's not so small, but in Korea, towns that size don't have much to offer, so it feels a lot smaller than it actually is. However, it is a very famous city historically. It was once the capital of the Baekje Kingdom, and so there are several interesting places around town, such as a hilly area enclosed by fortifications that's great to go for a walk in, as well as a tumulus graveyard for the old kings.

Buses to Seoul from there take a little over 2 hours. Alternativeley, Daejeon and Cheonan are both an hour away (maybe less).

Right. Taejon's a big city, and an hour away.
I went to Kongju a couple of times when I lived/worked in Cheonan. There's a big, wide river around there, and it's fresh air, lots of green mountains. Saw the tombs, went to the old Paekche hilltop palace grounds/fort. Saw where the maidens had leapt to their deaths to avoid being captured when Paekche fell. Off the cliff, and the river view there is very nice, but I doubt they were thinking about that at the time.

I believe you are thinking of Buyeo, which is also a former Baekje capital and is close to Kongju, but a different city.

Very true. The best demographic advice I have learnt on this board is to take the city you are living in and drop a zero off the total to get a better understanding of the social life of the city. Gongju is no longer a city of 150,000, but a city of 15,000. And Gongju does feel like a city of 15,000.

Seoul drops from 10,000,000 to a million and that does seem right. My city of Gwangju goes from 1,500,000 to 150,000 and that to seems about right also.

I like this rule of thumb, but others might have their own.

Thanks, J.B., stand corrected. Buyeo isn't far away from Gonju, not as big as Gonju I think. The fort/old palace of Paekche is really great. The small mountaintop/hilltop is forested now but there are foundations of the old palace buidlings and the cliff jumpsite is really a fantastic view.
That big old wide river is a charmer.

We really liked Konju when we traveled there but didn't live there. Nice, big market, beautiful area, good restaurants. Are you going to be teaching there? It's the one place in the Western part of Korea I'd like to live. If you know anyone who wants a teacher this spring, please p.m. me!

No way, buses from Kangnam Express Bus Terminal take 90 minutes, never less. It's 125 kms. Going into Seoul can take a lot longer.

Daejeon is 30 kms to Yusong (the closest district), downtown is another 10 or so. If that takes you an hour, I dunno what you're drinking. Cheonan is about 60 kms north, usually takes an hour on the bus. Bullet taxis are about W40,000. They take, mm, 10 minutes?

What's it like? Can you say "stir-crazy?" It's really beautiful but when it gets cold, boredom extraordinaire. I am glad I lived there, just to say I got out of Seoul, but I don't want to go back.

That's only if she has the disease. Maybe she's a real princess.
