Looking into a layover which would keep me in Shanghai, China for 13 hours. I am more familiar with Tokyo, but Shanghai...
It's 13 hours overnight.
Where would I begin? Sleep in the airport or explore? |

If you don't have a Chinese visa they won't let you out of the airport.
Fixed thanks

| Right, they won't let you out of the airport. Get some good sleeping pills or a good book. |

If you come from one of these countries then you can leave the airport without a visa.
From the website of the China Consulate in LA:
Citizens from the following countries do not need a Chinese visa to transit in Shanghai if they enter and exit from Pudong or Hongqiao airport, stay for less than 48 hours, and hold their valid passport, visa of the destination country, and on-going air ticket with departure date and seat confirmed:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, and USA. |

| What they say and what they do are very different. Last time I had a layover in Bejing for 12 hours and I wanted to leave the airport. They gave me a very firm NO. I'm from the US. |

Good point, although the above post does say specifically Shanghai, not Beijing.
On the other hand I know a person from NZ who spent nearly the full 48 hours at the expo in Shanghai without any kind of visa. |

| As for accommodation, you might want to consider 'Hang You' Hotel, which sits right next to Hongqiao International Airport. |

| I transfered in Shanghai recently and you can leave the airport, they make you go through normal immigration and customs, there is no transfer area. If you have a tight connection this will be a hassle because you have to to it twice, but if you have time there is nothing stopping you from taking a little trip into the city. |

The Maglev train runs from Pudong airport, takes less than 10 minutes to get to the downtown area. That's as far as i got in my short stopover there, but i think there's a subway you can hop on from there. |
