I wonder what the most common things "old" teachers find newbies to be doing their first month.

My experience that the new teacher is usually treated like apple-pie (unless they're colored, not attractive, fat, or some other thing Koreans don't seem to like) until the next newbie comes. Also- if the owner is trying to calm the waters it seems that disinformation will fly, the newbie becomes the new spy, and is isolated from the situation to a certain degree simply because they are to be the next money-machine. I've rarely met new teachers asking how to teach as much as they are striving to get the social niche taken care of first.

I have found that they want to know what things to do in the classroom. What sort of prep, how to teach this or that. The rest comes later. Smile

yeah...definantly drinking too much(but is that really a newbie mistake).
Also, mixing with too many negative people as they are the ones who are the most vocal so they get a bad impression from the get go.

Comments like
"you'll hit the wall in 3 or 6 months and you'll hate it",etc

I've been here 2.5 years and I haven't hit this imaginary wall yet.

It's the culture shock wall. It sets in after the honeymoon period. If you didn't experience it you're lucky. Mine corresponded with the winter blues.

Respecting what your boss says is a newbie mistake. Got to stand up for yourself more.

Yeah. Under normal circumstances respecting your boss would be a good idea, except often in Korea the boss's niceness is just a face over beepness.

Well, I'm generally positive about Korea with newbies, but I do warn them of the culture shock wall. It's good to be prepared.

As a former "newbie" (does 6 months remove this label for me), I'd say the first thing I wanted to do was beat the living sh*t out of anyone that called me "newbie."

Right- the term "newbie" tends to dement into- "You have no eyes or ears to see for yourself so shut-up." I guess there are two kinds of new people-those with extreme insight/life-experience to see things for what they are in a short time and those who aren't so insightful but hey- that's ok- as long as they don't pssssss on my fire.

Sadly- newbies get sucked into a battle that really isn't theirs with the old teacher "filling them in" and the director sucking up to them until later when he swings the knife around into their back.
