I'm in Korea now and love my job, but wanting to text next year off to study Korean at Uni. All you guys are getting me worried saying there aren't any jobs out there! Just curious, are you only trying to get in Seoul? I live in Suwon now and don't mind it at all, I wouldn't mind going to a city this size when I go back to work, but just curious if it's this bad all over, or just the big places like Seoul, Busan, Jeju, etc...??

I didn't have much trouble finding a job. Maybe it is because I am "handsome teacher," but really it has a lot to do with timing. Just apply near the end of july, beginning of august or in january/february. Times when the semesters start seem like huge hiring times. Looking on here and craigslist I was seeing 20-30 job postings a day a month ago. I think people are more saying there aren't any good jobs compared to a few years ago. But that is life. If you weren't here 8 years ago when you were making decent money and had loads of time off compared to now, then the job market will be fine. It is still a great deal, all things considered.

Seoul is definitely not easy, I'd imagine Busan as well. It's not hard to find a job per se, but it's a lot more difficult if you have a specific city/area in mind.

Good looks will obviously help.. but that goes without saying.

The point is for me that up until a year ago Seoul WAS EASY!

I landed a job at a flagshift afterschool programme at one of the major Seoul Schools a year ago.

Now I got one offer in 9 weeks of applications... None in Seoul or Gyeongi.

They want young, female newbs for Seoul, all the recruiters have told me so much as they're seen as more flexible and will except lower salaries.

If you're very flexible, it won't take long to get a job.

If you're like me, it will take some time.

I've received two offers in 3 weeks and both have sucked. I had 2 interviews with other hagwons outside of those last week but no responses back.

People here don't want jobs, they want paid vacations, thus the Seoul/Busan-or-nothing approach. They can't get along without a ton of friends, Itaewon, Western food and easy access to the familiar. Those folks suffer, while the dutiful ones find work anywhere and make money for themselves.

I expect that there will be a lot more available jobs after the Jan. 1st rules set in....
and there are ALWAYS jobs if you don't mind being in the middle of nowhere.

Making preferences is hardly the same thing as saying people don't want work. Korea is not the only option on the table for most.

Actually, for the under-qualified (BA, no experience and no real TESOL cert), if they want to make money at it (teaching ESL), Korea is the only option.

For those with some qualifications (beyond the BA) and some verifiable classroom experience there are lots of other options than can pay just about as well (with savings similar to Korea).

With all the rapists and murderers leaving, there should be thousands of jobs available.

Uncalled for. But it does seem that a considerable number of people might in fact be obliged to leave for minor legal infringements in their past.

I had one year of experience and I had plenty of offers in Seoul when I was applying a couple months back. I'm also not white or a female. However, I used close to 20 recruiters and applied to jobs on my own as well. They weren't all good offers, but the school I ended up at was great.

Just take your time and make sure you have all of your documents ready. Also make sure your application AND picture look great and professional. And most importantly (at least for me) was having a good reference from my previous job.

What's happening January 1? Pardon if this has been discussed - been all over these boards today and the search isn't playing nice with me. Smile

Teachers will have to submit national criminal record checks on applying or reapplying after 2011/01/01. Previously, local or state checks sufficed. Now out-of-state blemishes will surface & disqualify some. Immigration apparently requires a pristine record for an E2 visa.

I see. Thanks for the quick reply. So much information to take in as I consider taking a job in S. Korea!
