Which of the following are correct?
a) He did it quick.
b) He did it quickly.
a) It will arrive direct.
b) It will arrive directly.
a) He eats healthy.
b) He eats healthily.
I think it should be (b) in each case but I hear (a) being used quite often after coming home after living abroad for 4 years.
Have I completely missed something? |

Tricky one. I'd say that, if it was in a test, the safe answers would be B each time as generally you use adverbs, not adjectives with verbs in this kind of sentence. However, number one is fairly common in informal speech. A in number three sounds less common to me but I'm sure people say it. There are also set phrases where verb plus adjective are ok such as 'He travelled light' or 'he played it cool' etc... 'It will arrive direct' sounds like one of those to me. |

As I understand it, using the adjective in place of the adverb is an American colloquial habit. So grammatically speaking, the adverb is correct. |
