I am new to the Forum. Yesterday afternoon I wandered through the thread "Any tips for living frugally here? It was very interesting. It is nice to see that if I decide to get involved in ESL in Korea, the company will, at least, be average.
Not that we are still getting along. Two thoughts that came out of this review.
First the discussion of the change in Korean to US exchange rate recently. How much has the exchange rate fluctuated over the past two years, and are you being paid in US or Korean currency.
And, it seems the norm is a one year contract, true? During the contract period are there any "vacation periods". Are any long enough to travel about a bit? |

The currency has fluctuated within a range of about 30% since 2000 (950/$1 to 1250/$1 with a brief spell in late '08 when it hit 1500/$1.)
As to holidays (paid vacations):
IF you are working at a hagwan you can expect 10 working days for your vacation (not necessarily all at once and not always when it is convenient for you).
If you work at a public school you can expect 2 contracted vacation breaks of about 2 calendar weeks each (one in the summer break and one in the winter break). If you re-sign you will also get an additional 2 calendar week vacation as part of the renewal.
